Tyler Bray left the University of Tennessee with one season of collegiate eligibility remaining thinking he might be one of the first quarterbacks picked in the NFL Draft last month.

He wasnt drafted at all, dropping all the way through to rookie free agency. That made for a rather uncomfortable three-day experience.

Its not your choice, said Bray, who eventually signed with the Chiefs and is participating in this weekends rookie camp. Youre not the one sitting around in the draft room picking, so you just wait around. If you dont get drafted, you pick up the phone and try to find a team and I found a team here in Kansas City.

Based on ability alone, Bray should have been drafted. He displayed a strong arm at the rookie camp, which concludes today, and at 6-feet-6 and 232 pounds has the classic size that NFL teams look for in a quarterback.

He didnt get drafted because of a lack of maturity and work habits that were sometimes sloppy. Bray said he may have stayed at Tennessee for his final season had he known he wouldnt be drafted.

Who knows? he said. Im here now and Im just trying to move forward.

I knew I was going to have to earn my way regardless of if I got drafted or not. Im just looking forward to playing and hopefully learning the system.

The Chiefs seem to think they got a bargain in Bray by signing him after the draft. He is clearly the most gifted of the three quarterbacks participating in rookie camp, Dayne Crist of Kansas and Alex Gillett of Eastern Michigan being the others.

Bray is the only one among the group under contract to the Chiefs. Crist and Gillett are at camp on a trial basis and the Chiefs, who also have Alex Smith, Chase Daniel and Ricky Stanzi, appear to have no room for another quarterback.

Bray would appear to have an excellent chance to make the regular season roster. Smith and Daniel are the top two quarterbacks with Bray and Stanzi having a shot at the third spot.

Stanzi will have his chance to make his statement to new coach Andy Reid when the Chiefs continue with full squad practices beginning on Tuesday. Bray was making his early move at rookie camp.

He just needs to continue to improve, Reid said. Thats what he needs to do, learn the offense, handle it the right way and do the right things. He understands that. He knows the places where he made mistakes at Tennessee. But he also knows hes a pretty good football player.

Its important he learns our system and takes positive steps forward and not negative steps backward.

Chiefs safety Sanders Commings, a fifth-round draft pick from Georgia, played against Bray in college. He said he was surprised Bray didnt get drafted.

I thought he would be a top-three round guy, Commings said. This draft this year was pretty crazy, only two quarterbacks in the first two rounds. It was an unfortunate year for the quarterbacks in the draft. Im glad hes a Chief. Hes a tremendous athlete, a tremendous quarterback.

NFL teams evidently believed Brays negatives outweighed his potential.

I made a lot of mistakes at Tennessee, said Bray, who wouldnt elaborate. I had a lot of off the field issues and that could have had something to do with it. Stupid mistakes. Im here now and Im a free agent. Thats OK with me. Im just here to play football.

Every rookie in the draft has got to prove something. We all knew we werent going to come in and start. Im going coming in to battle. Im going to try to learn from Alex (Smith). Hes a veteran quarterback and Im going to try to learn a lot from him.

Smith
Daniel
Bray

I like this quote because he knew regardless if drafted or not that he would have to work his butt off and nothing was going be given to him in the NFL. There could be hope for him.

This is looking better as each day passes. I know he's an UDFA but he's the most exciting rookie UDFA I've ever seen. On the chiefs anyway.

Tryout players could stick; Tyler Bray, Sanders Commings look sharp

Moving on to those players that are already signed...

"Tyler Bray had a nice day today," Reid said, "I think that is obvious. He made some nice throws down in the red zone. He has to continue to make progress, but he did some nice things."

Bray was clearly the best quarterback on the field. It wasn't really close (Dayne Crist was a far second.) He has a strong arm and that was evident on a number of deep balls. You could tell he has a shot to make it. Just the way he was able to fire the ball into the receiver. It just felt like a pro quarterback.

"It was good to see [Sanders]Commings work at safety," Reid continued. "He played a little bit of corner but was primarily at safety. It was nice to see the progress that he made as he went on. We feel like he can still play corner but that gives us the flexibility to play that free safety position."

Flexibility. That's the name of the game for the KC Chiefs. The Chiefs now have two players -- Dunta Robinson and Commings -- who could realistically play either safety or corner. Both were acquired this offseason.

Interesting note: Commings, an SEC player like Bray, noted after Saturday's practice that Bray is pretty damn good. Commings was asked which quarterbacks he faced in his career that were better than Bray. Commings' response was Aaron Murray, his own quarterback at Georgia, and "the one from Alabama", who is A.J. McCarron.
