Why Geno Smith fell in the draft

I've seen a couple other posts about this... but this probably deserves it's own thread considering how many hours we've wasted arguing about the guy. This is the first article I've seen theorizing why Geno fell in the draft. Time will tell whether it's accurate.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nfl--ge...183846651.html

Quote:
On April 23, Smith, his agents, some family members and several friends gathered for dinner in New York in advance of the draft, a gathering confirmed by a family member. At one point, everyone around the table stood to give a toast to celebrate the evening.

Smith went last, thanking everyone and declaring that entire group his agents included were a "family" that would stay together his entire career, if not the rest of his life, the sources said. Smith, who at one point was expecting to be the No. 1 overall pick and at least a top 10 selection, has big plans for his career. Smith, according to the sources, hopes to emulate players such as Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers, putting himself cut above the rest of the quarterback fray.

The problem is that NFL types see a guy who, right now, doesn't understand how to get there.

"His biggest problem is that he doesn't know what he doesn't know," said a league executive, who spent extensive time assessing Smith before the draft.

"I'm not sure he knows how to take instruction because he pretty much wouldn't listen or talk to our coaches he's talented. He can sling it, he can fit it into tight spots, he can do a lot of things and I think he wants to be good. But you can't tell him anything right now. He's tuned out because he thinks he's got it all down."

---

One possible factor in Smith dropping to the second round is a concern about leadership.

"He doesn't have much presence, not much of a leader," said another league executive, who spent a great deal of time studying Smith before the draft. "I don't think he's a bad person, but that's not enough to be a quarterback in this league."

Two sources indicated that when Smith went on some visits to teams, rather than interact with coaches and front-office people, he would spend much of his time on his cell phone. Instead of being engaged with team officials, he would be texting friends or reading Twitter or a number of other distracting activities.

"All these other players who were in there were talking to the coaches, trying to get to know people and he was over there by himself," one of the sources said. "That's not what you want out of your quarterback."

Both sources indicated that Florida State's E.J. Manuel, who was selected ahead of Smith at No. 16 overall by Buffalo, was far more impressive in terms of his personality and maturity.

"Manuel gets it, he gets the whole big picture of what it takes to lead a team," one of the league executives said.

---

By Sunday, Smith was being convinced by other friends that it was the fault of his agents that he slipped so much in the draft, according to one of the sources.

"Right now, he's blaming everybody but himself and he has some buddies around him who are telling him that same thing," the source said.

If Mark Sanchez was drafted by the Chiefs where there is less media pressure, less expectations, etc... he could've possibly been a much better QB.
We will never know.

The point of all of this is: Other teams TRY the latest working model, and that is drafting and developing your franchise QB. The Chiefs continue to trade for other teams QB's that they are willing to part with. That said, I won't be a hypocrite and say that it will NEVER work, because like I mentioned above... different situations can call for different outcomes. However; the chiefs are going against the trends and it's not even close to working... when are they going to finally do what championship teams do?
make the obvious one too. Who would aaron rodgers be if he had gone number one?

Yeah, Jones came to mind as well. I think he probably takes over for Ben in a year or two and that's a situation where he can succeed.

The Chiefs picked up three new QBs this off-season (more, if you count guys like Dane Crist, which I don't). It's not like they stood pat.

Yay! They picked up 2 guys that were UDFA's coming out and paid a 1st for a 29 year old QB that lost his job. The only thing they invested heavily in is a known turd.

If only we could have had a guy with poor footwork, slow eyes, anti-social behavior and an inability to lead instead.

We will never know.

It still falls back on the player to make the most out of his path. Elite players will find ways to win regardless of the situation.
Do I expect Geno Smith to play at an Elite level regardless of the team he was drafted on? Yes. Even though his team, coaches, and front office might be in transition from teh suck... it's his job along with the rest of his teammates to get to work and win. Can we say Geno would have an easier path if he would've went to another franchise? Sure, but life isn't fair and he is still going to get a chance to prove himself. Good QB's elevate the players around them. I expect Geno to form a chemistry with a WR or two on the current Jets roster, and I expect them to break out into stars. The same thing Tom Brady does with every WR on his roster. The same thing Peyton Manning has done for his WR's.

I love how people say he "lost" his job.

Like anyone that is a chiefs fan, wouldnt give their LEFT NUT for Colin Kaepernick.

And second, he didnt lose his job, he got hurt, and his head coaches first born son took over, and ran with the job.

Its not really that big of a deal. No bigger of a deal than when Brett Favre was replaced by aaron rodgers, who was ted thompsons baby, or when Tom Brady, replaced bledsoe, who was bill bellichicks baby.

If Geno isn't your flavor than there of a half dozen other guys they could have had in later rounds. Hell they could have had comparable players to Smiff for 6th round picks and kept their 2nd. I REALLY don't think people realize what Alex is and how far away this team actually is. I think 5-6 wins is probably it.

So Alex Smith is Drew Bledsoe/Brett Farve?

He wouldn't even be Elvis Grbac if Marty would have stuck with Gannon.

I was with you until that one. His wr's have always been the types of receivers that fit him. Smart possession receivers. There wasnt a significant drop off for reggie wayne from Andrew Luck to Peyton Manning. For christ sakes, Eric Decker had 8 tds from tim tebow.....lol. Just a mini rant. Peyton manning from day one, (he is great, i love watching him play) but he has been surrounded by talent from DAY ONE.

No, and you know thats not what im saying. I have stated many times that Alex Smith is an average at best qb. The comparison though is the same. Alex Smith at the time he was replaced, was in the greatest stretch of his career.

25-27 with 4 tds, no ints over his last 5 quarters of football. So he wasnt playing piss poor, and was replaced because he sucked. He was replaced because Kaep is just that good, farrrrrr better than alex smith will ever hope to be. Lost is a very strong word to use for the alex smith situation.

What I'm saying is that if Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne didn't get along in the locker room, or for whatever reason there wasn't ever Chemistry there... Reggie Wayne wouldn't be getting the ball thrown to him, and we may never know what kind of player Reggie Wayne was.

It's the QB's job to develop a relationship with his receivers, throw them the ball, and give them a chance to show the world that they can do what it takes. It's easy to say a WR sucks... but in truth that WR may be a talented mofo that just couldn't build any chemistry with his QB. (Jon Baldwin I hope?)

I Expect Geno Smith to be a leader, develop chemistry with his WR's, and make his surrounding cast stars.... the same thing he did with Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey at WV. He fed them the ball with great accuracy. If Geno Smith sucked and was launching balls like Matt Cassel, nobody would know who the hell Bailey and Austin are.
