NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

From the Guardian

Quote:
The order, a copy of which has been obtained by the Guardian, requires Verizon on an "ongoing, daily basis" to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the US and between the US and other countries.
Quote:
The secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (Fisa) granted the order to the FBI on April 25, giving the government unlimited authority to obtain the data for a specified three-month period ending on July 19.

Under the terms of the blanket order, the numbers of both parties on a call are handed over, as is location data, call duration, unique identifiers, and the time and duration of all calls. The contents of the conversation itself are not covered.

meh. George started it, and Obama is continuing it. Now Feinstein (far left) and Chambliss (far right) are supporting it. This isn't a Democrat/Republican thing.

If you want to condemn it, that's fine, but you can't blame Democrats or Republicans for it. They're both clearly supporting it.

Agreed. This is complete government overreach and an assault on the 4th amendment for all Americans. Dems, repubs, all of them. The Patriot Act and the extensions were sold as selected intrusions on potential terrorist threats. Now, we are all potential terrorist threats, I guess. No bueno.

It seems a little odd that I often hear Obama supporters saying, "Well Bush did it too!" considering that they also claim Bush is the worst president ever.

And that's not directed at you Amnorix. It just seems like a somewhat common refrain lately.

Its basically rationalization. The average team supporter really doesn't have any ethics other then support chosen team. So, things that they rallied against when the other team did it matter little when their preferred team does it because their team is the one doing it.

This really should give every American pause. Left, right, independent, Libertarian, all of us. I really don't think that the majority of Americans ever thought that their government would invade their privacy to the extent of receiving everyone's phone records regardless of whether they were identified as a risk to National security. The Patriot Act and subsequent extensions were sold as needed to monitor the communications of suspected terrorism suspects not to cast the widest net possible of all Americans in order to hopefully spot a few terror suspects.

I work on the axiom that if you give government power, it will be abused.

That axiom hasn't been proved wrong yet.

In its origin under Bush, it was more focused - for instance, there had to be a foreign entity involved, otherwise a court order was still necessary. What they are doing now its just flat out wrong.
