NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

From the Guardian

Quote:
The order, a copy of which has been obtained by the Guardian, requires Verizon on an "ongoing, daily basis" to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the US and between the US and other countries.
Quote:
The secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (Fisa) granted the order to the FBI on April 25, giving the government unlimited authority to obtain the data for a specified three-month period ending on July 19.

Under the terms of the blanket order, the numbers of both parties on a call are handed over, as is location data, call duration, unique identifiers, and the time and duration of all calls. The contents of the conversation itself are not covered.

At least not YET, right? The issue is whether such extensive information could lead to abuse and therefore the government shouldn't get it. Not that it HAS led to abuse...

EDIT: Further note that it's proven wrong every day until and unless, suddenly, the government IS abusing its power and then it may be VERY hard to put the genie back into the bottle. Nobody is saying "let's act like ignorant idiots until the day martial law is declared."

I'm just saying that for all the shouts of "FIRE!" I hear around here, this isn't exactly Iran... Heck, the mere fact that people here CAN and DO shout "FIRE!" every day, and aren't hauled away to the gulag proves that this isn't Soviet Russia, Iran, Nazi Germany, etc.
You don't have to be in a totalitarian state for the government to abuse its power. Far from it. The US govt abuses its power everyday. Your state government abuses its power everyday. Its very likely that your city or county government abuses its power everyday. Corruption, kickbacks, unethical DAs and police officers, favoritism, exempting themselves from laws, and creating victimless crimes. Those are just some of abuses of power that governments of all levels revel in.

Why the outrage? You people are actually surprised by this? I figured they were doing this the day after the ink dried on the passage of the Patriot Act. Surprised it only took 6 years to get up and going.

I voted Jill Stein. I say that I'm open to voting Libertarian now because lots of votes for that kind of candidate will make more of a statement than voting for the green party.

Re-read my post. I am not surprised at all. I have been against the Patriot Act from the beginning and now here is another example of why.

Not surprised about this either.

The National Security Agency and the FBI are tapping directly into the central servers of nine leading U.S. Internet companies, extracting audio and video chats, photographs, e-mails, documents, and connection logs that enable analysts to track one target or trace a whole network of associates, according to a top-secret document obtained by The Washington Post.

The program, code-named PRISM, has not been made public until now. It may be the first of its kind. The NSA prides itself on stealing secrets and breaking codes, and it is accustomed to corporate partnerships that help it divert data traffic or sidestep barriers. But there has never been a Google or Facebook before, and it is unlikely that there are richer troves of valuable intelligence than the ones in Silicon Valley.

I'm not outraged, per se. Much like the fact that Suxnet was developed by the US, I think we all assumed that this was happening. It's a whole lot more real when you see a federal judge's signature at the bottom of the order.

The revelations about PRISM are just as interesting if not more.

You'd expect highly regulated telecoms to hop on board with this, but private companies? Hmm. Each of those companies is also publically traded. Notice that Tumblr and Twitter aren't listed. I'd have to look, but I suspect that Skype shows up after they were acquired by Microsoft.

Cuz clearly Bush 100% handled all of this. You can't blame politicians when they're passing a bill that has 60+% approval rates.

I wish Bush had been more open to SAFE but eh.. it's not like he magically passed all of this shit.

Your choices will be two fold:

Gary Johnson or Rand Paul

My first choice is Gary Johnson.

Being practical though, I think Rand Paul has the best chance of getting elected. It's taken a lot of hard work to get to the point where a candidate with a libertarian bent could get to this point where their election is realistic. We always get a lot of help when Democrats are in office (which is why we are never incentivized to vote for losers like McCain and Mitt).
