Eric Snowden: Greatest American Hero Ever?

Eric Snowden: Greatest American Hero Ever?

The NSA leaker has come forward in a June 9 interview on The Guardian, the British media outlet that broke the story of the NSA acquisition of phone records and access to online activity. Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old former technical assistant for the CIA, has come forward to identify himself as the NSA whistleblower being sought in the release of NSA files. He said he is not hiding because he has not done anything wrong.

Snowden is currently an employee of a defense contractor Booz Allen Hamilton, and he has previously worked for various others. This has put him inside the National Security Agency for the last four years.

The NSA leaker, aware that he would be facing the ire of the U.S. government, made the choice to sacrifice his comfortable life in Hawaii and $200,000 salary to make the public aware of the depth of the privacy infringements that he claims exist. He says he doesn't want to live in a society like that.

The NSA leaker was a former CIA tech assistant

"The government has granted itself power it is not entitled to. There is no public oversight. The result is people like myself have the latitude to go further than they are allowed to," he said.

You can view Edward Snowden's video interview here.: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013...r-surveillance

The technology specialist is "holed up" in a motel in Hong Kong, basically waiting for the other shoe to drop.

He wrote a note that went with the second set of documents, according to The Guardian:

"I understand that I will be made to suffer for my actions," but "I will be satisfied if the federation of secret law, unequal pardon and irresistible executive powers that rule the world that I love are revealed even for an instant."

The head of NSA, James Clapper, has reported the leaks of the NSA documents as a crime. You can read about that here.

In the court documents, Zazi traveled to Pakistan to train with Al Qaeda. Britain's Secret Intelligence Service intercepted an email from an Al Qaeda member and through their police work, arrested several suspected terrorists in the U.K. A large amount of equipment was seized, including computers and email messages. The plot to bomb New York's subway system was uncovered on a computer April 2009.

Britain's Counterterrorism Security notified Homeland Security of Zazi's plot. In fact, the Obama administration appears to have deliberately misled the public.

I'd be glad to look at them (probably tomorrow when I'm back at my computer), but could you tell me what I'm looking for? I don't understand the point of your post.

At this point, I'm all-in for the leader of the American Libertarian movement, Rand Paul.

As he said, "I do think that when history looks at this, they are going to contrast the behavior of James Clapper, our national intelligence director, with Edward Snowden. Mr. Clapper lied in Congress, in defiance of the law, in the name of security. Mr. Snowden told the truth in the name of privacy. So I think there will be a judgment, because both of them broke the law."

There's really no excuse for Clapper's lie. The guy should at least face the same consequences that Scooter Libby faced, although I think what Clapper did was more serious and more clearly a lie than what Libby was convicted of doing.

But that doesn't make what Snowden did right. Our security system can't work if each person cleared to know classified information is allowed to decide for themselves whether it should remain classified.

Sorry, it doesn't work the way you want it to. It never has and it never will, because it can't. You're imagining a fairy tale world.

If there were something unconstitutional, immoral, or illegal going on, there are other ways to deal with it than spilling national security secrets to the public. It's only after alternative approaches are exhausted that a "hero" would resort to this. Edward Snowden betrayed us all.

I havent read this whole thread, so this may have come up but...

Why are we so pissed about the NSA tracking our phone calls and internet searches when we all get on Facebook and tell EVERYONE where we are, where we're going, what we're doing and who we're with?

Plus, Google tracks everything about everybody and no one seems to care about that. No one complained when GPS helped locate the Boston bombers. If a teenage girl goes missing no one complains about using GPS on her phone to track her or images from traffic cams to look at cars/people in the area?

Does anyone truly believe they are so important that think the government is listening to their phone calls and reading their emails?

I don't. I hate Facebook.

I decline letting Google use my location unless I specifically turn it on. Also, I keep my GPS OFF most of the time to save battery life.

Not now, but as these corrupt people keep reaching and reaching, there may come a time when they WILL snoop on me for doing absolutely nothing wrong. We need to put a stop to this NOW before it gets out of hand.

Carlota, I hate to sound sexist or anything but it's like the HS Prom slut that loved to spread her legs for the football team. But that doesn't give the basketball team the right to rape her.

It's more like the HS prom slut who thought nothing of letting the football team take nude pictures of her and then complained when the football players gave them to the basketball team.
