Animal Cruelty

What's DC's general take on the issue of animal cruelty?

Do you think it's an issue worth spending governmental resources over to combat?

Do you think there should be harsh punishments for egregious violations of animal cruelty?

Do you think regular offenders of animal cruelty should face prison time or property seizure?

Do you think that undercover investigators of animal cruelty should be punished by law for revealing their findings?

I personally think people who treat their pets like they are their children are screwed up. I'm not talking about the family dog that you've had for 10 years and is "part of the family." I'm talking about the people who buy their pets outfits and use them as a proxy for human interaction. To me, that type of crap is rampant right now and it just seems to be bordering on being mentally unsound behavior. Growing up, our pets were treated very well and we loved them but in the end they were still just pets.

SIDE NOTE: I made the mistake of mentioning this opinion to a girlfriend and she flipped out on me. Thought I was accusing her of being crazy and went into full on histrionics. Funny part is, I wasn't referencing her at all, lucky for me her flipping out showed me she really was nuts.
I'm not fanatical about the circus thing, but large "wild" animals like elephants in small cages just seems so unnatural that it can't be right.

Yeah, the dog dress-up can be a little creepy. They probably like the attention, but I'm pretty sure the dogs hate the clothes.

Always a good move to go into full-on histrionics in order to show how you aren't crazy.

You actually can get them to do it a healthier way. You could potentially set at least a base minimum of humane treatment for these places, for starters.

Nothing outrageous, of course. Just requiring that they not get stuffed into cages like batteries into a remote.

Sound reasonable to you?

I guess the thing I'm curious about, is that you're more disturbed by the pleasure people derive from cruelty than the cruelty themselves. If I had told you a dude got off on shoving chickens into cages like sardines, perhaps your answer would have been different. Because there's not much physical difference between that and physically beating/torturing/whatever a chicken.

I feel the same way about crappy zoos. The zoo in San Antonio is devastatingly depressing... tigers hanging out in concrete enclosures looking bored out of their minds.

You are correct that the motivations play a much bigger role in how I feel on the issue but I don't discount the other issues entirely. I'm not sure I would go so far as to set government mandated limits though. In a perfect world, I would prefer a semi-governmental/industry agency to set "cruelty" guidelines or "grades" so the consumer can make the ultimate decision. That's one area I have no problem spending government resources on.... getting accurate information out to the public.

The problem NOW is that if I see that label on an item, how do I know it isn't just a label. That is an area I'd be happy for the government to step in and assure me that of what I'm actually getting.

people that abuse or beat animals are big POS aholes!

Now granted I eat meat all the time but I have an understanding that we as humans are on the top of the food chain. That being said, I would never beat a seal or torture some animal to death. I love animals too much to do that.

Probably would also be worth reviewing if taxpayer subsidies are going to the worst offenders.

Spoiler!

This is not for twisted pleasure, it's done exclusively for maximizing space and profit. Thoughts?
Does radical overpacking only count with chickens? Or does radical overplanting of seeds also count? Most if not all farmers plant far more seeds than the land can actually support because some of them won't germinate and grow.

As a result of this over-planting you're going to have many examples where multiple young plants will try to grow in the space for only one. The weaker plants will be starved off and die and the strongest(or fastest growing) plant will be the one that survives.

Does our moral outrage for chickens and not plants only exist because we can communicate more effectively with chickens than with plants. Sure we can say that chickens are more intelligent than plants but honestly we have little way to prove that to be true. Plants may exist and communicate in ways we simply cannot perceive.

Life is life, all has value, why should we treat one case of overcrowding differently than another?

While it's true that anyone who intentionally inflicts harm on lessor living creatures for kicks and to see it suffer has issues. That said the problem with the leadership of those pushing for more animal cruelty cases against factory farms is that they aren't interested in making the industry better. They want it gone in it's entirety. 'Reasonable' laws are being used to support the agenda of crazy people(which is a recurring theme on all sides of our government).

What they fail to understand is that even if you were to convince every person on the planet to never eat meat again you wouldn't save cattle from suffering. You would utterly exterminate them because they would have no value. In the 'best' case, you would 'free' all those previously farm creatures to our wild spaces. Cattle have been domesticated for 1000s of years, in the wilds they would be decimated by established predators and then we would have to deal with a massive population boom of those same predators.

Turning everyone vegan would be a surefire way to kill all the cattle on the planet. Is no life better than farm life? Freeing animals from suffering sounds like a noble idea on the surface but if you free them you have to ask...ok now where are they going to go???
