Animal Cruelty

What's DC's general take on the issue of animal cruelty?

Do you think it's an issue worth spending governmental resources over to combat?

Do you think there should be harsh punishments for egregious violations of animal cruelty?

Do you think regular offenders of animal cruelty should face prison time or property seizure?

Do you think that undercover investigators of animal cruelty should be punished by law for revealing their findings?

I had a guy who was a farmer ask me if I wanted to hunt deer on his land. He said he was lousy with them. Carried a rifle on his tractor and would just shoot them indiscriminately if he saw them, no matter what time of year. Farmers (many) think of deer as rats. They destroy their crops, get diseases and are just a ****ing nuisance. I was a little shocked at that, since I don't think of them that way at all, but I'm not a farmer and they don't screw with my livelyhood.

Is what that farmer doing cruel? Or is he just eeking out a living?

Those baby chicks you get at Easter for the kids are fun to keep. We had two. One grew into a rooster the other left me fresh eggs in the backyard.

I'm an animal lover. I agree with this post entirely. I'll give an example. While I lived in the Charlotte area, I saw a truck either coming or going from a Tyson plant down there. It was disgusting too me seeing the conditions those chickens were in. I haven't stopped eating chicken by any stretch of the imagination, but I won't eat Tyson.

While I'm sure that is a practice employed by many plants, that's the one I saw and have boycotted that company ever since. That's the solution. Don't like how a company does business, don't give them yours.

Drawing the line between abuse, and torture is difficult, however I'm all for strict punishment for blatant torture is fine by me. Abuse, not so much. They're being lined up to be killed to feed the masses. There's no humane way to do that.

People who just torture animals because they get off on it are my only concern when it comes to this type of thing, because as others have stated I believe that they pose a concern to the community. It's well known that a lot of those people start off with animals and move up to humans. They should be punished, monitored, and receive psychiatric treatment.

I understand your ant analogy and on the top layers of this issue, you are correct.

But, you can't look at those top layers and say this is it. There is emotion involved. Thats a game changer.

I would risk my life to save my dog from drowning or getting harmed by something. I don't do that for an ant.

The smoking ban arguments over the years told me that you and I view many issues similarly. Not everything of course, but we have the same philosophies when it comes to government.
