Rumor: IRS agents training on AR-15s!

Just being the messenger here.

Congressman Jeff Duncan says he witnessed IRS law enforcement agents train on AR-15 rifles. He is asking the agency: Why do they need that level of firepower?

UNCONFIRMED: But IRS says its criminal investigation special agents are equipped similarly to counterparts in other law enforcement organizations

Congressman Jeff Duncan says he was surprised to see Internal Revenue Service law enforcement agents train on AR-15 rifles with 30-round magazines as he toured an indoor federal firing range. He wants the IRS to tell him: Why do they need rifles?

He told reporters that he understands that IRS law enforcement agents have arrest powers and can carry guns. "But do they need that sort of stand-off capability that you would have with a rifle? I don’t think so," he told TV news station WHNS. The IRS could instead call on the FBI or another agency for such firepower as needed, especially in a time of austerity, he told Politico, adding: "Are Americans that much of a target that you need that kind of capability?"

They sound like Bolsheviks!!

This shouldnt be any news. IRS has always had part of the service armed to the teeth and well trained. Pretty much all law enforcement from local small town to the feds use ARs.

I'm confused, is Homeland Security going to be their version of the Gestapo or are the IRS agents?

AR 15 is not "that sort of stand off capability". Its a simple semi auto. This is some politician looking to get a quote in the paper.

Law enforcement may be facing anything from murderers to rapists to violent drug dealers.

Is the IRS worried about rogue accountants?

That's not the point. The IRS has been targeting certain groups who just happen to also be pro-gun including semi-automatics that anti-Tea Party folks want to take away. You need to look at the whole picture. This is still way too much fire-power, particularly when they can call in the FBI for any extra firepower.

I will requote:

Seriously, an IRS agent using this? One too many deductions—bam!

So we should have an entire wing of the law enforcement community completely ignore any kind of training on a ubiquitous firearm because a first-time reactionary congressman with no military or police background at all thinks it's overkill?

Of course not. Law enforcement never knows what's around the corner, and there's no reason in the world why they wouldn't train with a wide variety of weapons, including AR-15's. Elliott Ness and Frank Hamer were both agents of the Treasury Department, and the idea of them and their successors not having access to even semi-automatic weapons is ridiculous.

Also, it's interesting how the anti-gun-control crowd screams that a semi-auto AR-15 is no big deal, not the deadliest weapon around, no worse than a hunting rifle, etc., etc., etc., until The Man picks one up, and then it's suddenly OH MY GOD DEATH MACHINE.

As for the hypocrisy, sure, the IRS targeted "certain groups", including a bunch which were conservative and therefore pro-gun, but it wasn't solely (or even primarily, or even majorly) because of their stances on gun control. The IRS, as far as I know, has no philosophical opposition to what the media likes to call assault rifles (obviously).

Unless there's something big that I missed, this is a case of a small-time politician trying to get his name in the paper.

Keeping one's own money is now a criminal offense deserving of death. Wow, this really is post-America!
