Sharyl Attkisson On Computer Hacking: 'I'm Outraged'

Sharyl Attkisson On Computer Hacking: 'I'm Outraged'

CBS News' Sharyl Attkisson appeared on "CBS This Morning" on Monday and said she was "outraged" by her computer being hacked.

Shortly after the Associated Press said last month that the Department of Justice had monitored the phone records of multiple AP journalists during a leaks investigation, Attkisson said that she believed her computer had been compromised. The Department of Justice told Business Insider that it had no knowledge of "compromising" a computer belonging to Attkisson.

Last week, CBS News confirmed that Attkisson's computer had been hacked and was taking steps to identify the responsible party:

A cyber security firm hired by CBS News has determined through forensic analysis that Sharyl Attkisson’s computer was accessed by an unauthorized, external, unknown party on multiple occasions late in 2012. Evidence suggests this party performed all access remotely using Attkisson’s accounts.

During her appearance on "CBS This Morning," Attkisson described the process CBS News underwent to investigate her computer. "The analysis found very unusual activity buried deep in the computer," she said. "The unauthorized party accessed the CBS computer at my home on multiple occasions, and specifically in December, they used sophisticated methods to cover their tracks, meaning they tried to remove the indications of their previous unauthorized activity."

She described the breach as "a very serious and disturbing matter." She added, "I'm outraged that anyone would do such a thing and CBS News takes all of this very seriously."

Attkisson is known for her aggressive reporting on the Benghazi attack and the Obama administration's Fast and Furious controversy. She would not say on Monday whether the hacks were related to those stories, but did say, “Whoever was in my work computer, the only thing I was working on were work-related things with CBS were big stories I guess during the time period in questions were I guess Benghazi and ‘Fast and Furious.’"

The forensic expert's report is really interesting. Oh wait...there isn't one that's been made public.

Release the report, dump the logs or post the disc images. Right now you've got reporting from CBS about a CBS reporter.

Should have called the help desk when her "...computers just turning themselves on at night and then turning themselves back off again."

Think this happens once a month or so?

When you read this article it's actually hard to tell whether or not an intrusion actually happened. Notice that it's not someone from CBS corporate commenting...just this reporter reporting on herself.

They appear to be cautiously barking at the heels of the Obama administration right now.

Sure, it could be an act to drum up hype for a fake story. It does say that CBS confirmed that her computer was hacked, and they hired an independent security firm, and that the firm ruled out "... malware, phishing programs, that sort of thing.
