Yes, if you look at their platform. But if you study the real roots of the Republican party, it's always been the party of big govt. Look at Lincoln's policies of subsidies for corporations for public works projects, an income tax, inflation. I would say it's the conservative wing of the party that represents this.

People need to vote on policy decisions, not race, or hate, or fear-mongering. Both parties use those tactics because they work and it's unfortunate that most people don't see past them. Agree with no invasion of privacy, etc. but I also don't think it's a single party issue.
While I agree that historical positions of the two parties doesn't mean much, the more important reasons this guy gave for becoming a Republican don't have anything to do with that.

Take a look around, the Midwest is full of white meth and prescription addicts. Drugs are being pumped into every community where it is financially wise to do business. The government can't stop it and damn sure shouldn't be depended on to do so.

What does the young Mrs. Obamaphone want now? She's already getting part of her rent, phone, food, and condoms paid for. I don't care if he/she is white, black, red, or brown... Get a job!

No self respecting individual, race be damned, should stoop to the level of playing the victim and accepting poverty by allowing their votes to be purchased with trinkets.

I agree with what you say but here's the problem; it takes a lot of courage and self determination to change your way of life, especially when the downside means a lengthy struggle. For example, any youth who's not received a good education, has had no self reliance taught to him, and has been preached to his entire life that the system is set up against him, will likely never have the courage to break the circle...and more likely perpetuate it.

It's fundamentally a difference between being stuck in a state of arrested personal development and learned helplessness with the need for a nanny state mommy to coddle and care for the children under the nanny state's control and being a grown ass man who takes care of himself and his family through his own self-reliance and determination. A man doesn't need nanny state mommy to pay his bills. A man earns. If a man is out of work, a man still earns. A man has dignity and enough self respect to demand more of himself than to be taken care of as though he were some child. A man's instinct should be to fight the urge to fall under the sway of mommy's promises of free candy and toys at the expense of his own self reliance, freedom and self determination.

Liberals can be and very often are well intentioned, particularly the supporters as opposed to those in power. But too often liberal/progressive government solutions are 1) lip service to a real problem, and 2) a pathway to insider power gathering and societal dependence.

Sowell talks about working in the minimum wage enforcement agency, and how his coworkers were expressly disinterested in examining whether their program was working. The sole interest was collecting federal $$ for their enforcement efforts. Basically 'these laws give us something to do and $$ for doing it, so shut up and keep your head down.'

I think a lot of our problems as a decisionmaking community isn't our apathy so much as our implicit assumption that some duties of government are so obvious that surely someone is carrying them out for us. Surely someone is hard at work cutting waste. Surely someone is taking advantage of technological innovations to make government more transparent. Surely those who see policies garnering negative results are telling legislators and surely legislators are responding to those observations.

For the vast majority of the time, NONE of that is going on. Feelgood initiatives are introduced and touted for sympathy and enduring political support. They are poorly implemented and bureaucracy puts another aspect of everyday life under their purview and the whole monstrous machine moves on to the next shiny object.
I'm a liberal democrat, and I love this post. If more people were as eloquent, insightful, and level-headed as you are in this post, I think there would be significant strides in cross-party understanding and communication.

Bravo.

If you agree with the content how does that fit with being a liberal democrat? Or are you just impressed with the language but in full opposition to what is said?
