The Iranians and Al-Quaeda fighting proxy war. Why would we want to stop that?

I'm confused on two points.

  1. If you kill 90K+ human beings with bullets, we will let it go. But, if you kill <200 with chemical weapons...... we are going to care now.
  2. Why in the **** in a million years would we arm groups that are publicly supporting Al-Quaeda just because they are Anti-Assad/Iranian?
Best guess I can come up with from reading the tea leaves is...............

  1. Because we publicly created a line in the sand, they crossed it. Lesson learned........... don't draw lines in the sand. Don't try to get me to buy into the moral authority angle. 90K died before we acted.
  2. The only theory that makes any sense is that our "friends" asked/pressured us to do this. The Saudi's, Jordainians, the Royals of Quatar, Kuwait etc. are worried about Iranian influence expanding in the ME.

I'm going to be with BE on this. We need to stay the **** out of Syria.

we are supposedly arming the moderates, not just to defeat assad, but to defeat the islamists after assad is forced out...

for that reason, and that reason only, i fully support arming the "moderate" rebels with whatever it takes to win both wars...

I agree our Sunni "allies" are pushing for it. We might just be doing it to help speed the process of them killing eachother.

Good for you!

AQ and Iran have always been enemies. But this is how the ally system works—it drags you into more wars.

Where is this fighting happening? Have I missed something?

And a general answer to #2 is that, if two enemies are fighting you help the weaker one to keep the fighting going as long as possible. It bleeds both sides down, distracts them, and you want the weaker one to take down the more powerful one if someone's going to win.

But again, where is this happening?

Thats just not going to happen. Once we let those weapons get out of our hands, we have no idea where they are going to end up. Maybe in Afghanistan, maybe somewhere to attack us. This is just a bad idea.

Did the kid ever get anything worse than a C after this rule was implemented? Not a chance.

I'm not saying it's morally right or wrong, but does it make the child because of it? Think about that for a second.

Syria

Orignated back in the Arab spring. A true uprising of people who wanted freedom like Egypt.

Assad is prompted up and supported militarily, socially and politically by the Iranians. Assad is not religious, just a dictator like his Dad. Loves power not promoting a holy war.

Once is started to drag out into a sectarian war, the groups that hate the Iranians took advantage of the void and supported the rebels with manpower, arms etc.

Shitties vs. Sunnis we want to stay as far from that mess as possible. We can't pick the "right" religious side.

The problem with this idiot logic is that there is no way to 1) ensure the arms go to the 'moderates' , 2 ) make sure the arms stay with the 'moderates' and 3) be sure that the 'moderates' will establish power at all....4) heck we can't even be sure who are moderates and who aren't....I'll bet you 90% plus of the syrian sunni 'moderate rebels' support Hamas, believe that Israel should be destroyed, and think it is cool to do martyrdom operations...

Just look at egypt, or palestine, turkey, Libya or any other of the numerous places where Islamic governments have promised 'moderation' to see what will happen...
