UVA student Elizabeth Daly cleared of charges from water-buying incident

Quote:
A trip to the grocery store turned into a nightmare for one University of Virginia student last April.

Elizabeth Daly, 20, was confronted by six men and a woman after she left a Harris Teeter in Charlottesville. She had just bought bottled water, cookie dough and ice cream, The Daily Progress reports.

As she was walking to her car, she was approached by a group of state Alcoholic Beverage Control agents wearing plainclothes. The agents thought that the water bottles Daly was carrying was a 12-pack of beer.

Police say one of the agents jumped on the hood of her car. She says one drew a gun, the Progress reports. Daly did not know who the agents were, so, she tried to rush out of the dark parking lot.
Daly was with her two roommates.

"They were showing unidentifiable badges after they approached us, but we became frightened, as they were not in anything close to a uniform," Daly said in a written account of the April 11 incident.

“I couldn't put my windows down unless I started my car, and when I started my car they began yelling to not move the car, not to start the car. They began trying to break the windows. My roommates and I were ... terrified," Daly said.

Agents charged her with two counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer and one count of eluding police. All of the charges were Class 6 felonies carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison and $2,500 in fines per offense. She had to spend the night after the incident in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.

The charges against Daly were withdrawn on Thursday.

There are more stories of out of control cops these days, than I've ever heard before. Abusive and trigger happy beyond belief.

This is the kind of thing that happens in a police state.

Innocent citizens who have done nothing being assaulted and arrested.

The fact the charges were dropped just means we're not living under the yoke of completely totalitarian bunch of fascists.

No, they weren't assaulted.

And it's such an isolated and rare event that it actually makes the news.

Your thread title is hyperbole. Accept it.

And, there's this:

The woman was on edge after spending the night listening to stories from dozens of sexual assault survivors at an annual "Take Back the Night" vigil on Grounds, said Daly's defense attorney, Francis Lawrence.

Fleeing from law enforcement officers typically is a bad idea.

She had NO IDEA they were law enforcement officers.

If someone pulled a ****ing gun on me and jumped on the hood of my car I'm peacing the **** out.

If they had dealt with a TEENAGE GIRL a little less aggressively no one would care.

No one that innocent should ever be frightened of BOOZE COPS.

"They were showing unidentifiable badges after they approached us, but we became frightened, as they were not in anything close to a uniform," she recalled Thursday in a written account of the April 11 incident.

They WERE showing their badges. It seems pretty clear that the females were a little worked up (as they admit) and over-reacted to the situation.

Someone in plain clothes that flashes some blurry shiny object at me doesn't get my respect, sorry, especially when they then PULL A GUN ON ME.

For all that girl knew those people were thugs or con artists.

Well, then, you are just as likely to be arrested as they were. Sorry, GoHyerbole.

So you think it's OK for these cops to do what they did?

This was a little girl threatening no one, minding her own business, buying water.
