Career question RE: IT computer science field

I am interested in getting some job training in web development/computer coding career field. I have very little techie ability but am very interested in learning. Been reading up on some of these web development boot camps that teach you all this nerdazoid stuff in 9-12 weeks.

Example http://www.devbootcamp.com

Does anyone here have an opinion or experience about such job training?

Comments regarding anyone's experience in the career field is also encouraged. TIA

get into the wireless/cell tower equipment world.(Samsung (current 4G equipment provider for Sprint), Alcatel Lucent)
constant upgrades (3G to 4G), fiber insertions, cabinet swaps, antenna swaps/upgrades; new network deployments etc.

work will never go away.

If I finish a second degree, I'm abandoning journalism for CIS.

This. I've been in telco for the last 12 years, moving around between 3 major players. The work is always there and the pay is really good if you know your shit.

I don't think it's worth it to invest any money in web development training these days. It's very difficult to make a career out of web development. It's almost impossible to differentiate yourself from the thousands of other web developers looking for work. And because it's web development, you're competing with applicants from all over the world as opposed to a regional pool of applicants.

Unless you have very advanced skills in a specific subset of development, there's going to be thousands of other applicants with training exactly like yours. It takes much more than this kind of training to land a good paying job. Which usually requires you to go to an accredited university and get a real degree. There's just no fast track method that would get you an actual career with just the training like this.

And that website doesn't look real promising. They're focused on a very short frame of time for the training. Which usually means they want applicants in and out as quickly as possible whether you got an actual education or not. And take a look at their list of "Teachers". Look at the profiles of the teachers there. Most don't list any degree, and show a life of hopping from one temporary job to another. There's no stability or record of upward advancement in their field, and these are the teachers. That should tell you something.

It's impossible to tell you exactly what you need to get your foot in the door in an IT-related field. But I can tell you that this training won't open many doors for you, other than maybe an entry level position that will get you a little experience to build on for an actual career down the road.

Web Development will make you some dough, but you need to understand networking and infrastructure to really be good.

Look into SQL development and be a DBA would be my advice.

Not really.

You just need to know what the **** you're doing, and once you can say that you do, you need to go out and network hard. Go to tech fairs, conventions, etc. and talk some people up.

The problem with the I.T. field is that HR departments are doing the screenings for job applicants and they don't have a ****ing clue. Last time I was digging around to see what was around, they were wanting multiple years of experience for entry level positions lol

I mean hell, I got my current gig because I was bullshitting with my current boss at a bar after a Microsoft conference. Only reason I went to said conference was because I'm cheap as hell and didn't want to pay for Windows7.

If it wasn't for whoring myself out, never would of made it in the game. Don't feel too awkward about it either, as the ones needing help would rather find it themselves than rely on a HR department to do it.

Those HR people have no ****ing idea what the hiring manager is looking for. You can have experience in something that is the exact same thing they are wanting, but if it is a different name or brand they simply do no grasp the concept its the same ****ing thing.

The computer industry is a separate world of its own. It has its own language, history, and culture. You will be entering a job market and competing with people that have been interested in computers since they were able to read and type.

Not saying you can't be very good at it, just saying expect a large learning curve to catch up to people that have been doing it for fifteen years and only went to school for the sheep's skin cuz they already knew how to do it.

In other words: You won't even know how much you don't know. You won't be able to get what you need from one online course. Do you have any database, lan, wan, experience? Do you understand retail terminology? How are your math skills? Can you link tax tables into a order form? Do you understand network security, firewalls, secure sessions, TC/IP?

This is retarded. I work for a big corporation in LA. It is pretty much impossible for us to find good CSS developers, and almost as hard to find good Javascript devs. Java devs are also still in plenty of demand, as is Ruby, Python, even PHP.

OP, get an entry-level programming book, download some frameworks and create some hello-world apps. Delve further into whatever interests you, find some open source projects, download the code and try to make your own changes. If you think you have something worthwhile, try to contribute it to the project. Go to meetups of devs, user's groups etc. Find people to act as mentors. Post on stack-overflow. Etc. etc. etc.

Seriously this field is still so hard to find good developers - if you show smarts and some initiative someone will give you a shot. From there you can get experience then hop to a pretty good job before you know it.
