Interesting Study Regarding US Nonbelievers, Re: Categories Of Atheism

On June 6th of this year at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) Departments of Psychology and Learning and Leadership, completed research focused on nonbelief within the United States. This project was designed and implemented by Christopher F. Silver doctoral candidate and Thomas J. Coleman III a student at UTC. The research sought to explore the complexities of nonbelief identity in the United States.

Well, because there isn't a bumper sticker. Through ignorance you've misunderstood my signature.

Anti Theist
Often angry and confrontational when presented with a different viewpoint than their own. Unwilling to acknowledge that their opinion is also speculative in nature. Clings to their dogma more than so called "spiritual" or "religious" people. Very few friends. Often lonely, angry with poor hygiene. A study has confirmed average penis length and girth is 2 standard deviations smaller than the population at large. Typically this population segment is aggressive and hostile, and far more proselytizing than even the most extreme fundamental religious group. Typically scores very low on life happiness and satisfaction surveys and wishes to drag everyone else around them into misery. Infrequent sexual desire is also common.

You totally misunderstand. Its all about letting people know its OK to question religion. Religion is losing the argument on every front.

Its mostly to let people know its OK to be a Atheist and not be afraid to talk about it.

The funny thing is that Dave Lane does go out of his way sometimes to (for lack of a better term) "promote" atheism, and he is outspoken about it, but I think he does it by reflex. From what I see from personal experience people tend to automatically group you into a religious belief. In this country people tend to just assume that you are some type of Christian. Failing that they want to be assured that you belong to some other acceptable religious group. As an atheist/agnostic/etc...once you've put up with decades of mindless proselytizing, you tend to want to cut to the chase and get down to actual conversation if the other person is up to it. If they aren't then you just don't tend to discuss religious issues with them. The quicker you get that worked out the better. It saves time, and it saves you from hearing the same tired old regurgitated "arguments" over and over again.

I completely agree about questioning religion, i've truly lost count of how many times i've questioned my beliefs, questioned my faith... i am anything but some self-satisfied Christian.

But to be honest, you dont always seem to be taking such a "live and let live" view of it, it often seems to be more of a Bill Maher-like inquisition and opportunity to laugh at others with differing beliefs.

In truth, i've yet to see you start a religious thread where multiple believers jump in and castigate and poke fun at your thoughts, it just doesnt seem to be the case, most people of faith seem to just leave it alone because they know the conversation is just going to go round and round without any give from either side.

On the Planet atleast, atheists are anything but afraid to talk about it... but the reverse doesnt always hold up quite so well, although its been several years since anyone has really jumped in and given it the old "what for"... i dont intend to do that because i simply feel unqualified, being as backslidden as i am.

All i can ask for here, is the same tolerance for Christians that listopencils website offers to all.

There is nothing wrong whatsoever about people questioning religion. You are not required to believe yourself.

The problem exists when those who don't believe execute the same actions and prejudices to those who hold religious views that they feel they are the victims of themselves.

It's a problem all humans have. It's not good enough to know you're right, you have to beat an opposing view into the ground. You must hear from their mouths that you're right in order to satisfy one's own insecurity. Problem is religion and politics are two deeply held beliefs that people will fight to the death over.

It is an exercise in futility that is best left to each their own.

By the way, if you click on the pic in my sig, it links to the "guide to divinity" page on the ULC site. It's a generic breakdown of many of the world's major religious beliefs.
