Interesting Study Regarding US Nonbelievers, Re: Categories Of Atheism

On June 6th of this year at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) Departments of Psychology and Learning and Leadership, completed research focused on nonbelief within the United States. This project was designed and implemented by Christopher F. Silver doctoral candidate and Thomas J. Coleman III a student at UTC. The research sought to explore the complexities of nonbelief identity in the United States.

Oh and the sun dance lasted 10 minutes except to those that didn't see anything. The "three secrets" Mary told the girls were not true and basically worthless. Oh and the mother of the main child said it was all a fraud and her daughter was misleading the world.

You're a broken record. This is a thread about atheism, not liberals or republicans.

Bull. Liberals are 5x as likely as Conservatives to identify as atheist. There's tremendous overlap.

It's a habit of some of the more "Eccentric" folks around DC. Just lump anybody that disagrees with them as evil _____, no matter what the subject. They can't think outside of the simple little box they live in, so everything they discuss has to morph into hating/blaming whatever it is they despise regardless of any connection.

I do think there's some merit to the idea that atheists are disliked because of the rejection of beliefs, but I think it has more to do with the fact that 1) until fairly recently, atheists were generally quiet about their beliefs and 2) the "what if they're right" factor is pretty horrifying for religious types who have spent their entire lives believing that there's going to be a beautiful afterlife where they get to meet up with their granny and play bingo all day. Having someone suddenly boldly stating that their entire belief system (and countless hours of their lives) has been useless is pretty devastating.

Going the other way, many atheists look at religious types as silly rather than as a threat to their belief system. They've already done some level of evaluation of the likelihood that there's a god and have decided that religion is a giant waste of time. The only threat from religious types is that of influence on greater society (government, school, etc.) rather than anything that is a personal belief.

On the issue of god being "you," I think there's a lot of merit there, though I wouldn't state it exactly that way. I think I'd simply say that people have a tendency to make god whatever they want and ignore any bad parts they don't like.

And for what it's worth, I'm this guy. I think religion is completely silly and a gigantic waste of time, but if you want to spend your life believing in a fairy tale, more power to you. Just keep it out of our government and schools.

Non-Theist

The fifth typology is termed the Non-Theist. While not many individuals identified themselves as this type, they did have experiences with others who self-classified as being non-theists. For the Non-Theists, the alignment of oneself with religion, or conversely an epistemological position against religion, can appear quite unconventional from their perspective. However, a few terms may best capture the sentiments of the Non-Theist. One is apathetic, while another may be disinterested. The Non-Theist is non-active in terms of involving themselves in social or intellectual pursuits having to do with religion or anti-religion. A Non-Theist simply does not concern him or herself with religion. Religion plays no role or issue in one’s consciousness or worldview; nor does a Non- Theist have concern for the atheist or agnostic movement. No part of their life addresses or considers transcendent ontology. They are not interested in any type of secularist agenda and simply do not care. Simply put, Non-Theist’s are apathetic non-believers. They simply do not believe, and in the same right, their absence of faith means the absence of anything religion in any form from their mental space.
P.S. His delivery at the end is just outright creepy. And who the hell pronounces the "h" in "Theresa"?

Not sure where you're getting any of that info, what i've read says nothing of the sort, in fact, the Catholic church has deemed it worthy of belief, not that thats going to sway you.

Did you read any of the links provided? Many people saw nothing. Is Benny Hinn a miracle? Are people seized by the "spirit" that talk in tongues and go stiff and pass out miracles?

Do you believe that as well or do you believe it's a group hysteria thing? Suggestion / wanting to have attention from seeing a miracle is a powerful inducement for most. To say otherwise is foolish.

I will say one thing about Scott free. He at least has some reason to believe in his mind. He has tried to find evidence for his beliefs. Thats far more than most theists so congrats for that.

His deep desire for it to be true has put a lens of acceptance over the "facts" in this case but the guy is at least searching. In the end he will find the truth if he continues to look.

Great take. I agree with quite a bit of that.

For me, I think I fit this more than any of the others:

Quote:
Seeker-Agnostic (SA)

The third typological characteristic is the Seeker-Agnostic. Seeker-Agnostic typology consists of individuals attuned to the metaphysical possibilities precluding metaphysical existence, or at least recognizes the philosophical difficulties and complexities in making personal affirmations regarding ideological beliefs. They may call themselves agnostic or agnostic-atheist, as the SA simply cannot be sure of the existence of God or the divine. They keep an open mind in relation to the debate between the religious, spiritual, and antitheist elements within society.
Seeker-Agnostics recognize the limitation of human knowledge and experience. They actively search for and respond to knowledge and evidence, either supporting or disconfirming truth claims. They also understand, or at least recognize, the qualitative complexities of experiences in the formation of personal meaning. Seeker- Agnostics do not hold a firm ideological position but always search for the scientifically wondrous, and experientially profound confirmation of life’s meaning. They may be intrinsically motivated to explore and seek understanding in the world around them. The diversity of others is accepted for the SA and co-existence with the “others” is not only possible, but also welcomed. Their worldly outlook may be mediated by science; however, they recognize current scientific limitations and embrace scientific uncertainty. They are comfortable with this uncertainty and even enjoy discussing it. Some Intellectual Atheist/Agnostics or Anti-Theists may accuse the Seeker-Agnostic of avoiding responsibility or commitment to a more solid affirmation of atheism. In other cases, outsiders may see it as an ontological transitional state from religion or spirituality to atheism.
In some cases, Seeker-Agnostics may generally miss being a believer either from the social benefits or the emotional connection they have with others such as friends or family. At times, their intellectual disagreement with their former theology causes some cognitive dissonance and it is possible they may continue to identity as a religious or spiritual individual. However, taking those exceptions into account, the majority of Seeker-Agnostics should in no way be considered “confused.” For the Seeker-Agnostic, uncertainty is embraced.
I was raised in a pretty deeply devoted family. And as far as I know, I'm the only one in my family who would consider themselves as anything but Christian. Some of my family members would likely be quite shocked to know what I don't believe. I insist on being very honest with me beliefs though, so when they ask I always tell the truth. That has made for a few touchy conversations at times. My daughter is still being raised Christian, and still attends church. And that's just fine and neither I, nor her mother(Christian) has any problem with that. I'm honest with my daughter, and when we discuss things, I explain my position with complete neutrality and let her think for herself. I'll let her grow as I did, and she'll have her own decisions to make when she's old enough to understand such things completely.

I agree with you in that I find religion to mostly be a waste of time. But still, there are aspects of religion that I acknowledge as being helpful and positive for many people. Fellowship, care for one another, do unto others, help those less fortunate, etc. For some people, that provides them with some decent life tools that keep them from being an asshole. In that respect, religion can be a positive. My problem is when religious people ignore these simple basic teachings, and act like as asshole anyway. And then use religion to justify their asshole behavior or the ignorance that their religion affords them. That and putting forth their religious beliefs as fact, and trying to apply those beliefs to things outside of their religion like school or politics.
