The Top 20% Have No Idea How The Bottom 40% Get By

July 17th, 2013

In a financial planning guide for its workers, the company accidentally illustrates precisely how impossible it is to scrape by on a fast food paycheck

http://www.theatlantic.com/business/...m-wage/277845/

How McDonald’s workers CAN’T live on their minimum wages: Fast food giant sets up website to help their employees budget better… and it recommends they get a second job

Suggested monthly expenses for the hypothetical McDonald’s employee working a 40-hour week include $600 for rent – a figure that has raised eyebrows among anyone familiar with the housing market in cities like New York and Philadelphia.

While it is still possible to find housing with three-digit rent in some parts of the U.S., an average apartment in Manhattan rents for about $3,000 a month. Even in the outer boroughs it is nearly impossible to come across anything cheaper than $1,400 a month.

Some day, with hard work, dedication, strong skills, many in the lower 20 today will be the upper 20. Funny how that works. Many people come from poor backgrounds to excel and have great life success. Others will chose to remain on the government role. They will do nothing to improve their lot. And they will hold all those above them economically in low regard.

They will find support from politicians who curry favor with them in return for votes.

A truly free and empowered black man is a threat to the democratic machine. Keeping them down and providing for them at a minimal level while encouraging a race divide has made many people very rich and very powerful.

The big problem here is that the left wants to enable poor people to mooch off the government for benefits, and the right sticks to this flawed notion that poor people can't claw their way out of poverty even if they tried. Rather than trying to redistribute wealth, we should be focusing on getting lower-level employees the skill sets to better their situations. That benefits both the lower class, but also benefits the country as a whole because we then build a more skilled labor force.

I was about to respond to HCF similarly. “Bitching is doing something. Not as much as putting in the work to improve one’s situation but it’s still something.”

Yep. Think about how much money is paid in taxes every year by Professional athletes (MLB, NBA, NFL etc). It is enormous, and they are not the uber rich of this country. Warren Buffet advocates the uber rich to pay more taxes. Then again, he has already said he will give away all his money when he is dead, already gives a tremendous amount to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

No actually, that's not true anymore. Very very few in the lower 20 will ever get to the upper 20. That's the point. You can't simply pull yourself up by your bootstraps anymore. That ability is practically gone. Because of this:

You can't climb the ladder anymore. And the ones at the bottom are actually going further down the ladder.

I don't know how to fix it though. I wouldn't advocate actual forced wealth distribution. It would be impossible to implement anyway, because the people with the power to do so, don't want things to change. But things are clearly not working, and it's not going to get better on its own. And if shit ever seriously hits the fan, the top 5-10% is going to have all the power and they're not going to give a **** about the one's without.

That is a naive view of the way the world works. When you are poor, hard work does not always lead to success especially if the system poorly equips them to deal with life's challenges. There are plenty of people working multiple jobs pouring in a shitload of hours who can't get promoted and are then forced to live below the poverty level. There are plenty of qualified people who are a paycheck away from poverty and losing everything.

That's a life I don't pretend to know. I agree that there is a major freeloader problem. But let's not naively suggest that all low income people are lazy.

Of course its true. It happens every day. Its a function of an individual going to the effort to improve his or her lot. People do it all the time. Lost in your fancy statistical analysis is how many new additions to the bottom get added every day through illegals and job losses. Its not a simple everyone gets ahead issue. Many get ahead, the top 20% has flux, new come in, some go out...its dynamic. When its a better deal to sit on your ass and do nothing inexchane for a vote then you lose the least motivated who enjoy the government tit. Dry up the tit and watch them find some motivation.

No its not at all naive. Its real world. When you are poor and do the things needed to improve your lot, work harder, more hours, use time off to improve skills, whatever, you can grow. But you cant grow and improve waiting for it to just happen.

Blame the system if you like, the system is bad but lazy is a individual component.

Yes there are a lot of paycheck to paycheck folks who need better opportunities. Too bad our government doesnt think industry is a good thing. Those job opportunities get less and less with every regulation, every new tax, and every new government mandate.

Look to government to find the problem. Look to Private enterprise and individual effort to fix it.

So if you choose to ignore the fancy statistics showing that there's a problem, you can just believe that there's not a problem. I see how that works...

People don't do it all the time. That's why there's so many at the bottom, in which you bitch about supporting. The fancy statistics aren't ignoring them. The statistics show that the bottom is growing considerably. We both agree that's a problem, despite what you think the cause is. But if your theory was right, wouldn't most of those people move up the ladder if it were so easy? Why is the bottom growing so rapidly, if all they have to do is put in the effort to improve?

I know many people on welfare and government assistance. And they hate it and would do anything to improve their situation. Not everybody living in poverty wants to be there. Not by a long shot. You're really quick at labeling the bottom as lazy, but that's just not true for a considerable portion of those living in poverty. There's definitely plenty that need to be cut off because they won't take responsibility. But you underestimate how many are there because they have no way out.

Go figure a dollar goes further at McDonald's. God forbid we subsidize healthy fruits, vegetables, and meats at the same rate we subsidize big corn. You wonder why healthcare premiums are out of control. **** your dumb.

Also, we didn't have all of these tips 20 years ago b/c they didn't exist. Everyone has a tv and vcr, what makes you think we wouldn't have had cell phones if they existed?

Cost of electronics has more to do with technology and production than anything. It's the nature of the industry. Moore's law. Computer chips shrink, perform and price fairly exponentially.
