The Top 20% Have No Idea How The Bottom 40% Get By

July 17th, 2013

In a financial planning guide for its workers, the company accidentally illustrates precisely how impossible it is to scrape by on a fast food paycheck

http://www.theatlantic.com/business/...m-wage/277845/

How McDonald’s workers CAN’T live on their minimum wages: Fast food giant sets up website to help their employees budget better… and it recommends they get a second job

Suggested monthly expenses for the hypothetical McDonald’s employee working a 40-hour week include $600 for rent – a figure that has raised eyebrows among anyone familiar with the housing market in cities like New York and Philadelphia.

While it is still possible to find housing with three-digit rent in some parts of the U.S., an average apartment in Manhattan rents for about $3,000 a month. Even in the outer boroughs it is nearly impossible to come across anything cheaper than $1,400 a month.

Yeah, this type of comparison is better if you use commodities.

Amen. I know a few who are lazy ****s, but i also know a few who are completely embarrassed about needing the assistance. One was a single mother of 1 who wouldn't use her EBT card unless its late at night with no one else around. It took her 6 months, but she eventually found a decent job.

To sit here and say, "oh it just takes some effort" just goes to show how out of touch some people are.

Sometimes you have to look back and realize who helped you along the way, because most people received help from one person or another that allowed you to have the success you had/have.

Your situation is not the same as others and lumping them all into the category of "lazy" is ignorant.

People don't do it all the time. That's why there's so many at the bottom, in which you bitch about supporting. The fancy statistics aren't ignoring them. The statistics show that the bottom is growing considerably. We both agree that's a problem, despite what you think the cause is. But if your theory was right, wouldn't most of those people move up the ladder if it were so easy? Why is the bottom growing so rapidly, if all they have to do is put in the effort to improve?

I recognize an issue you nitwit. I choose to look beyond a government driven solution. And I choose to recognize the success of many who made it and didnt sit at home and whine. I also recognize the need to help many. This whole liberal mishmash thinking that only government can fix problems and that humans are somehow incapable of mending themselves is what is sending us to hell. Not all are lazy. No one said they were all lazy. But if you deny there is an ass load of freeloading lazy bastards out there then you have your head up your ass.

But it DID just take some effort.

She tried for 6 months and found something. That is good and she used the system in the way it is supposed to be used.

Even though they don't explicitly state it, I think most people don't include cases like this in their generalized welfare bash.

I believe if people work harder or smarter and make more money, that's fine. The problem occurs when the people that have the money change the rules to work in their favor. Politicians and bankers use insider information to make piles of money, and when there are winners, there are losers. But the losers mainly just got screwed by the people making the rules.

That doesn't mean a job at McDonald's was ever meant to be a job that could support an entire family. But inflation certainly has risen a lot more than the average wage for a lot of people other than just the minimum wage worker in the last 50 years.

I have no sympathy for the deadbeat who wants everything given to them. I do have sympathy for the average American working hard trying to make ends meet, when two incomes doesn't cover what one income did a half century ago. Of course a ton of people buy a lot of needless shit that people didn't buy a half century ago as well.

When I talk about systematic failures it's that low income families often pay taxes to support an educational system that is grossly failing them. Well... Maybe don't pay taxes but the expectation should be that when you go to school, kids are getting educated. We have an unequipped work force in a world where low income jobs can be replaced by automation.

The answer is that the teachers union needs to stop making excuses and educate our kids. I know this will give me shit, but I don't mind educational or tuition assistance to good kids who work hard but live in a community where the system fails them. And in the private sector, enough with executives lining their own pickets whole revenues drop. They need to start investing back into their companies particularly in training and developing their work force. Every dollar in compensation increase is a dollar that could have helped a low wage worker learn skills to take on harder jobs.

As they should. In fact, they should pay more.

The United State afforded them the opportunity to succeed. Without it, they have nothing. If they don't want to post their membership fees, duck them. They can leave.

Blame the system if you like, the system is bad but lazy is a individual component.

Yes there are a lot of paycheck to paycheck folks who need better opportunities. Too bad our government doesnt think industry is a good thing. Those job opportunities get less and less with every regulation, every new tax, and every new government mandate.

Look to government to find the problem. Look to Private enterprise and individual effort to fix it.
Yeah right. As if the healthcare industry hadn't been broken since it started...

I will never self checkout. **** that. We need to find a way too sabotage self checkout.

Also, if you do eat at a fast food restaurant, maybe don't bus your own tray to the trash. They've trained you into cleaning up after yourselves so they don't have to pay somebody to. Your mess could be somebody's job.

When did a minimum wage job go from being an entry level job for high school kids to becoming a job a family of 5 was supposed to live on?
