Walmart

There's been an issue local to Springfield regarding the rezoning of property to build yet another Walmart Market. The very basic description would be that City Council approved the rezoning of a property that a church sold to Walmart. Petitions were circulated and ended up getting more than enough signatures to either have City Council change it's mind or to bring it to a public vote. City Council decided to bring it to a vote. The church and the neighboring landowner who also sold to Walmart filed an injunction to prevent the public vote. A judge ruled this morning that the issue would not go to a vote and the rezoning would go on as originally passed by City Council. Needless to say, people are a bit outraged.

Apparently the petition/referendum process violates state law. Do you know any of the details as to what the violation is?

Why are the people of Springfield so opposed to a new Walmart in this location?

People are ****ing idiots and hate Walmart basically. Walmart in that location would be perfect with the university right next door and downtown as well.

It's more of a grocery store only, and probably smaller than a typical huge grocery store. It isn't a normal gigantic Walmart.

People are protesting a grocery store? That seems weirder to me than the normal anti Walmart stuff about squeezing out mom and pop stores of all kinds.

Got it...thanks. I would think that would make it less of a big deal then.

I think the Neighborhood Markets are a newish thing. They are smaller stores designed to be the opposite of the mega stores. Fewer crowds and parking nightmares, conveniently located, etc.

That's what they get for trying to restrain trade and in effect, seizing property of another by acting as if they bought an paid for it.
Them them wallow in their anti-capitalist outrage.

There we some concerns regarding the increased traffic in an area where there are a lot of people, including elderly, that don't have cars (more likely to have vehicles running people over). That intersection isn't exactly built for a large quantity of traffic. There are a couple of markets downtown that will likely be put out of business. Our downtown is mostly local mom-and-pop shops. Older buildings, and unique items. Some people are afraid of moving a chain that close. Also, some people think it's tacky with the National Cemetery across the street. And, yes, some people feel like Walmart is taking over. It's like the 12th one in town.

As for me, I'm not down that way much, and I shop at Hy-Vee.

Yeah, you can't leave the proposed parking lot by heading to the West because of how ass-backward the lot is laid out along Grand and Campbell
