Walmart

There's been an issue local to Springfield regarding the rezoning of property to build yet another Walmart Market. The very basic description would be that City Council approved the rezoning of a property that a church sold to Walmart. Petitions were circulated and ended up getting more than enough signatures to either have City Council change it's mind or to bring it to a public vote. City Council decided to bring it to a vote. The church and the neighboring landowner who also sold to Walmart filed an injunction to prevent the public vote. A judge ruled this morning that the issue would not go to a vote and the rezoning would go on as originally passed by City Council. Needless to say, people are a bit outraged.

I understand people not wanting it there for various reasons, If everyone boycotts the place it won't be there. Simple enough to do. I occasionally shop at Wal Mart here but only if they have the Organic goods I request of them.

As for me, I'm not down that way much, and I shop at Hy-Vee.
I'd never heard of Walmart's Neighborhood Markets before so when cosmo said that it was more like a grocery store, I did some research. It turns out that the concept of these stores is to serve the local neighborhood as opposed to drawing people from wider areas like their normal stores do so it shouldn't really increase traffic much except in the most limited sense. The people who don't have cars, will stand to benefit from a competitively priced grocery option right in their neighborhood.

I don't have much sympathy for local mom and pop grocery stores either, although I shop at one on rare occasions because it's the closest place to my house. They're an anachronism. That's why most of us shop at HyVees, Albertson's, Schnuck's, Price Choppers, and Hen Houses to name just a few big chains that damage the mom & pops every bit as much as this Walmart NM would.

Hy-Vee is employee owned though, whereas the proceeds from Walmart go directly to not paying players to make the Royals a winner.

One of the things I learned in my research was that even though these Neighborhood Markets typically only carry the types of goods found in a grocery store, you can order from Walmart's expanded inventory of goods online and have it delivered to the Neighborhood Market for pickup. That's pretty convenient for a pedestrian neighborhood without creating the potential traffic that a Super Center might create.

Like I said I don't mind shopping there if they have what I need. The people are generally very nice and helpful.

That doesn't change the effect it has on mom and pop grocers. Price Choppers can be locally owned, but if you're trying to run an independent mom and pop market nearby, you're going to get crushed.

Right because the Mom & Pops can't compete pricewise.

I rarely shop at Walmart, but that's only because I rarely shop and when I do it's usually for something I can get at a store that's closer to me. If I had a Walmart in my home town, I would have no problem taking advantage of the convenience.

I wonder how many people that are complaining actually shop at the local shops and not the grocery store. And being that this isn't a place for general goods, I would think shops that offer unique items and other assortments should have no problem staying in business. In fact, an increase in traffic to the area should actually help them.

The Neighborhood Markets I've seen are generally smaller than most Krogers or larger grocery stores. Isn't there one over around Metcalf and 87th?

There is one right about there and there is one at 75th and Neiman as well. They definitely have tried hard to not give them that typical Wal-Mart look. If it just said Neighborhood Market without the Wal-Mart in front you would never know what it was.
