Shamanism...anyone have experience

Probably the last place to ask such a thing but anyone here in your life travels ever have contact with people who believe in or practice shamanism?

Ive recently had a chance to discuss some of the ideas and theories as it relates to plants with a practitioner. Been pretty interesting in many ways and just wondered if anyone else has ever crossed paths with these people.

When I was 12, i met a guy who was in to shamanism and studied a lot of different native american rituals and things.

It changed my life forever just knowing that those concepts existed.

Its fiction, but around the same age I read the book 'Yaqui way of knowledge' which is a fun, quick read.........among others

http://www.amazon.com/dp/0671600419

I find spiritual topics really interesting..

Its actually very interesting. Im sure there are a million kinds of shamanism and I know very little. But our conversations about more holistic approaches to land management and plant and animal communities has been interesting and in some ways enlightening. Its nothing Dave should fear unless he just chooses to. Nor should you be ashamed that you have some interest in the subject.

Why?

Wow...just the wiki synopsis is a bit disturbing.

"It is written from a first person perspective, told by sixteen-year-old Frank Cauldhame, describing his childhood and all that remains of it. Frank observes many shamanistic rituals of his own invention, and it is soon revealed that Frank was the perpetrator of three deaths of children within his family before he reached the age of ten himself. As the novel develops, his brother's escape from a mental hospital and impending return lead on to a violent ending and a twist that undermines all that Frank believed about himself."

Sounds like perhaps a nice read but would not seem too shed much light on shamanism and the beliefs and practices of dealing with a more spiritual connection with the earth.

I think someone's hacked HCF's account. There's no way that the same guy who's okay with marijuana farmers getting taken down by federal swat teams wants to have a reasonable conversation about enlightenment facilitated by plants and fungi that grow around the world.

Its really an interesting approach from a land manger POV. Dont laugh at it. I thought it was hocus pocus but many of the observations that were made supported the approach I have been taking on a rather large habitat improvement project but came to it from a different perspective. And helped me to understand how what is growing now may be a connection to the past or may actually be hiding the past from us today. Just as aggressive people can shadow others who are not into conflict, aggressive plants can keep other plants from expressing themselves in an unmanaged plant community.

I studied Hmong Shamanism during college anthropology classes. the Hmong are the only tribe to win the battle of assimilation from the chines. they are also the same folks that helped US soldiers during the vietnam conflict -- they were the ones rescuing downed heli pilots and bringing them to safety while american troops were either forbidden or simply could not execute safe rescues.

Like all things religious, it takes a lot of study, a lot of time to actually develop an overall understanding of shamanism. Western culture religion is quite shallow in comparison.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spirits exist and they play important roles both in individual lives and in human society.
The shaman can communicate with the spirit world.
Spirits can be benevolent or malevolent.
The shaman can treat sickness caused by malevolent spirits.
The shaman can employ trance inducing techniques to incite visionary ecstasy and go on vision quests.
The shaman's spirit can leave the body to enter the supernatural world to search for answers.
The shaman evokes animal images as spirit guides, omens, and message-bearers.
The shaman can tell the future, scry, throw bones/runes, and perform other varied forms of divination

I have not looked into it but at a glance it would appear to be nonsese like all religions~
