Shamanism...anyone have experience

Probably the last place to ask such a thing but anyone here in your life travels ever have contact with people who believe in or practice shamanism?

Ive recently had a chance to discuss some of the ideas and theories as it relates to plants with a practitioner. Been pretty interesting in many ways and just wondered if anyone else has ever crossed paths with these people.

"It is written from a first person perspective, told by sixteen-year-old Frank Cauldhame, describing his childhood and all that remains of it. Frank observes many shamanistic rituals of his own invention, and it is soon revealed that Frank was the perpetrator of three deaths of children within his family before he reached the age of ten himself. As the novel develops, his brother's escape from a mental hospital and impending return lead on to a violent ending and a twist that undermines all that Frank believed about himself."

Sounds like perhaps a nice read but would not seem too shed much light on shamanism and the beliefs and practices of dealing with a more spiritual connection with the earth.
Don't expect texts to tell you what to think. Read them to think.

Once, I took a bunch of nutmeg in college and stepped back to view the spiritual fabric of life. Most people don't know that nutmeg is a hallucinogen. It is. I strongly discourage its use. That's some witch doctor shit right there. I'd add that the hangover is a 48 hour affair, and it's incapacitating.

I was extremely interested in it in college, to the point that I practiced some shamanic meditations and such.

Terence McKenna is mandatory reading. Archaic Revival is a fun anthology of a lot of his different shorter writings and presentations. His definitive text is called Food of the Gods.

Carlos Castaneda is interesting, but I think he was a charlatan.
