Burger flippers want $15/hour

Like this will happen.

http://fox4kc.com/2013/07/29/kansas-...-minimum-wage/

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Fifteen dollars an hour. That’s how much some fast food and retail workers say they deserve to make an hour. On Monday protests will happen in seven U.S. cities including Kansas City to push for the change.

The workers planning to protest say they want economic dignity. They say that means livable wages, benefits and humane working conditions. They say they can’t live or support their families on what they’re making.

Rallies are planned in Kansas City as well as New York City, Chicago, St. Louis, Washington D.C. and other cities.

Some workers say they plan to walk off the job in a one-day strike. Famed civil rights leader Reverend CT Vivian will lead Monday night’s events. Vivian worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Junior and has provided civil rights counsel to several presidents including presidents Reagan, Clinton and Obama.

Industry representatives say they can’t afford to pay employees more. They say most fast food restaurants operate on a meager profit margin making it impossible to increase wages.
Most fast food and retail workers make minimum wage. In Kansas that’s 7.25. In Missouri it’s 7.35. So 15 dollars would be more than double their current pay.

Monday’s rally starts at 6:30 at the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City Missouri.

This would also likely kill the smaller independent chains and restaurants. McDonalds may be able to absorb the added costs but it would end up limiting our choices in the future.

No, they aren't worthless or worthy of derision. However, they are not worthy of a higher wage either.

A counterargument to that exists: these workers now have twice the purchasing power, and given that the price of goods has not increased to twice its original cost, they will have more discretionary income. That will increase demand, which means greater potential opportunities for more types of restaurants and franchises.

Never said that. Were you born this defensive? I'm simply saying that if there's a difference in talent like you suggested, that higher wages will attract better people, how come they're not already in better jobs? It's a fair point.

Ask Mc Donalds. If they were truly worth higher wages then they would have found burger flipping jobs elsewhere that paid more. The fact that nowhere else will pay more to flip burgers either shows that job doesn't demand higher wages to maintain a sufficient service level.

But where is this pool of money coming from that won't significantly increase the costs? As stated on this thread already, the owners of these franchises aren't making millions of dollars that they are withholding from the poor downtrodden employees. As far as I can tell, the report that Clay posted was an outlier that simply looked at the overall McDonalds corporation and not the franchisees or other chains.

I haven't seen any credible info that other chains - say Burger King - could survive a rate hike like this. They are struggling as it is.

It's a conspiracy by the mighty burger corporations to hold the poor worker down.

I wasn't defensive. At all.

Higher wages will attract better people in food service, but not all people in food service are capable of performing in a different career, just like other people in different careers aren't capable of working in food service.

Someone with a high school diploma can manage a fast food company and do it quite well, I'm sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't have a lot of other opportunities. It's also possible that they may not be all that skilled in other endeavors. If you are someone who can do that well and another job pops up that pays you twice as much, wouldn't you take it?

Sure, people could likely go to Burger King, but they might find their workforce shittier than it was before with the quality of the food suffering to levels unacceptable even for fast food.

Besides, this isn't just a McD's issue. Most wage earners are underpaid compared to their productivity and increases in cost of living over the last two generations. This is just an example of the problem.

Sometimes, especially in really shitty economies, people take whatever job they can find and will work it in spite of the fact that they are underpaid relative to their skill level.

It's not a poker table you can walk away from without injury. If you have bills and responsibilities and your options are to take a $9/hr job or starve, you take the job.

Shit, there are people with Masters degrees making barely above minimum wage as servers or part time workers. That doesn't mean they are unskilled workers.

Did they ever have them?

"Say, what aisle are the hemorrhoid creams on?"

"Herp derp, they are over by the taco shells on aisle 3. Actually, I'm not sure. Let me go ask my manager."

The employee is never seen again.

You don't think these people will eventually rise out of the mess and get back where they should be?

Also, remember that a business does not provide jobs or wages out of kindness. They provide jobs because they need a task done and the wage is how much they value that task.

A little while back Gearhead Wrenching buddy was supposed to meet me by a local lake to fish but first he had to run by McD’s to get a couple of Happy Meals for the kids. An hour passes so I text him to find out what the holdup is and he just replies “McD’s”. I reply back, “I know right? You’d think meth heads would be moving faster.”
