Burger flippers want $15/hour

Like this will happen.

http://fox4kc.com/2013/07/29/kansas-...-minimum-wage/

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ó Fifteen dollars an hour. Thatís how much some fast food and retail workers say they deserve to make an hour. On Monday protests will happen in seven U.S. cities including Kansas City to push for the change.

The workers planning to protest say they want economic dignity. They say that means livable wages, benefits and humane working conditions. They say they canít live or support their families on what theyíre making.

Rallies are planned in Kansas City as well as New York City, Chicago, St. Louis, Washington D.C. and other cities.

Some workers say they plan to walk off the job in a one-day strike. Famed civil rights leader Reverend CT Vivian will lead Monday nightís events. Vivian worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Junior and has provided civil rights counsel to several presidents including presidents Reagan, Clinton and Obama.

Industry representatives say they canít afford to pay employees more. They say most fast food restaurants operate on a meager profit margin making it impossible to increase wages.
Most fast food and retail workers make minimum wage. In Kansas thatís 7.25. In Missouri itís 7.35. So 15 dollars would be more than double their current pay.

Mondayís rally starts at 6:30 at the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City Missouri.

And then the labor market overall will get skewed.

The real solution to their not having enough, is to stop all the money printing because prices would fall during this depression, which helps people like that through. This is why I can't take the left seriously on economic issues. They advocate the very things that harm those people, then appear as though they will be their saviors. Then govt grows.

The employers aren't forced to hire anyone. If they didn't think paying them the Fed min wage wasn't profitable, they woudln't be doing it.

What a bizarre statement...

So they would just have a few thousand restaurants with no one working in them, huh?

An honest question.....if the study was based on McDonald's 2012 annual report ...does the annual report include salaries and wages paid by the franchisees? That would seem very odd....

Do they not realize, taht if they get paid $15 an hour it will not be a livable wage. The cost of living would go up and they would be in the same spot. Just wait, so Union will try and step in and get this done.

I disagree with the blank statement that people aren't worth what they are paid now because that isn't necessarily true. There are a ton of fast food workers who are partaking in their first job or are in school and will go on to bigger and better things. Some people, for economic reasons, are overqualified and performing these jobs as a temporary basis.

However, I do agree that the worker, who is at his/her peak and is content being a lifelong regular hourly employee are most likely damaged goods. In this case it's easier to demand for more than to learn a new trade or go somewhere else.

Either way there is no way that any restaurant can sustain that.

Finally, someone sees the bigger picture here. Bumping unskilled wages to $15/hr will cause wages to go up across the board and cause the prices of everything to go up as well, and in turn they aren't going to gain a damn thing. These fast-food places aren't operating in a vacuum.

Hell there are a lot of skilled workers out there that don't make $15/hr.

Hard to tell. New fatasses from other states leave the places they ruined and come down every day because there's jobs here.

How is it bizarre? No business operates if it's unprofitable, and if the labor became cost-prohibitive the owner wouldn't pay for it. In the extreme case he simply doesn't go into business (or shuts it down).

The reason the min wage doesn't really matter is because the owner has decided that paying the labor results in more profit than not paying the labor. Simple. It really doesn't impact the wage scale anyway - as I've pointed out in the past you can't get labor below a certain point anyway. If you offer $2/hr nobody will work for you anyway. 7.25/hr is law, but it's not that critical to the hiring decision.
