Thats their worst side dish, it was disgusting but I like their brisket sandwich. Bryants and Gates are my fav BBQ destinations in KC though.

Jack Stack is so over-rated. Good sides, but meat isnt anything special at all and its way overpriced.

Definitely. They have to make too much product to meet demand, and it all suffers. What they ought to do is only make a finite amount of food each day, and when it sells out your day is done. Alas, the company would lose the opportunity to make as much money as they're making now, so it'll never happen.

I'm starting to wonder if there's a single BBQ joint still worth a shit in Kansas City. All my old favorites have fallen off hard.

Anyone been to Jon Russell's BBQ in Overland Park?

Lately, I've been going to Gates at like 11:30 PM. It's delicious then and they really pile on the meat just before close.

If you're going there right before close, it's probably not the meat they're piling on.

Each place has its strengths and weaknesses.

I tell people Jack Stack is safe for "tourist bbq." It's a sit down restaurant with wait staff, food is good, some items are very good. But it's not really authentic KC BBQ joint food.

Arthur Bryant's is unique. Their signature red sauce is like nothing else in the world. It's so unusual, that some people don't like it because they've never had anything close to it before. For those folks, Bryant's now has a more traditional sweet BBQ sauce that is GREAT on turkey. Their fries are wonderful, so is the cole slaw. 18th and Brooklyn store should be on the list of National Historic Places.

Gates Beef and 1/2 sandwich lean is a great sandwich. It's big, it's expensive. The problem with gates is consistency. They have problems with turnover in their help, and you can get a great meal or a cold, crappy food sometimes. That's their biggest problem. When they're on, its awesome. But too often they're not on, and you pay a lot for disappointing food. Gates sauce is famous for a reason, because it's damn good.

Oklahoma Joe's ribs are good. Z Man is good. Fries are OK, some people LOVE them, you get a LOT of them on an order, but I think they use way too much seasoned salt on them. Their beans are just OK. I used to love their Chicken Gumbo until it gave me a three day case of food poisoning once. Joe's has a regular sauce, and a "Night of the Living Hot Sauce."

Don't discount some of the lesser known places either. You can get a great meal at Rosedale (avoid the ribs-get fries for sure), Danny Edwards (best burnt ends), L.C.'s (big ass sandwich, good fries), Big T's (get the mixed plate, great sausage medallions), Smokin' Guns (everything is good), Woodyard BBQ (best smoked chicken and BBQ chili in town)... All these places are legit, all are wonderful. Don't just limit yourself to easy choices.

Phobia is right, Gates tends to ncreases the portion sizes right before close. I went in for a sandwich around 11 pm one night and it was about twice as big.

Had Rosedale at least once a week while in school in KC. Took a lot of running to stay in shape, but worth it.

I've seen mixed comments about Rosedale here in this thread.

My thoughts on Rosedale, as I've eaten there on many occasions.

It's a real family style BBQ joint. They serve up food on styrofoam plates, so it's nothing fancy. But you get the best VALUE for your buck of any of the BBQ joints. On a dinner plate you get three sides: standard is beans, fries and cole slaw. Their fries are crinkle cut, come in a wax paper bag and are killer. Beans are different, they have little chunks of onion and green pepper in them, cole slaw is creamy and good.

I've never liked their ribs much. Too fatty, too much like greasy pot roast. Also they cube up their brisket, so it's served as a loose meat sandwich. Their ham and turkey are both excellent. And they serve stuff like chili dogs, lots of deep fried appetizer type stuff, and so on. Best thing is, they don't serve fountain drinks. All the soda is in bottles or cans, and they have a wide selection, the best selection of any BBQ joint. And beer in 16 OZ cans, lots of blue collar choices like PBR, Busch, Miller, etc. It's a blue collar place.

So it's different, not for everybody. But I like it a lot. It's one of my top three in KC, mostly because you always get a quality big meal for little money.

I ate at Johnny's BBQ in Mission a few weeks ago. I had no idea it even existed until then. Sort of wish I had remained ignorant of the joint.

My last trip to Jack Stack was a huge disappointment. All the meat was tough, and the portions were tiny. Shame because I have always been a huge Jack Stack fan.
