Alex Smith is "the best in the league"

BY RANDY COVITZ
The Kansas City Star

There’s little question any success the Chiefs have this season hinges on how well quarterback Alex Smith performs.

The Chiefs paid a hefty price in acquiring Smith from San Francisco for a second-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft and a conditional second- or third-round pick in 2014.

Smith led San Francisco to the NFC championship game in 2011 and started the first nine games of the 49ers’ Super Bowl run a year ago, and Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson believes strongly in Smith.

“Ultimately, every team has to have a quarterback,” Pederson said. “I think we have the best in the league.”

The best? Better than Peyton Manning … Tom Brady … Drew Brees … Joe Flacco … Matt Ryan … Eli Manning … Colin Kaepernick … ?

“There are a lot of great ones,” Pederson said, “but over time, Alex has proven he can get it done. He’s a sharp guy, he brings a wealth of knowledge, he’s experienced, he’s a proven winner the last couple of years, and he needs a team to embrace him.”

what about the conclusion that there weren't many wins? Also, that cassel had a stupid face?

Well obviously with Charles. And, Im not debating with Smith and comparing him to any top 15 qb, much less a top 5. I was comparing your desire to take Matt Ryan, over Colin Kaepernick........

Its not really. Alex Smith was a completely broken qb when Harbaugh got ahold of him, during a lockout no less. The only way to win in 2011 was to nurture without placing too much pressure on him. That part makes complete sense......I don't expect the I wont say haters, but detractors, or doubters to care, but that's the truth. He had to nurture him...

Meh. I was with you because it was actually pretty accurate and funny until the very last part. He didn't have that many parts in losses, that part is actually pretty true, but in wins? In 2011, he led, READ THAT WORD LED, 7 come from behind victories in the 4th quarter. Regardless of how he played during the rest of the game, you earn your money as a qb in the 4th quarter when the game is on the line. That's why people are KILLING Tony Romo. He is great at racking up yards, but he is God awful in Clutch moments.

Do you think defending a great pistol offense / read-option offense is any different than defending a great traditional QB?

Great traditional QBs do not show the exact coverage every play and yet defenses have not stopped those QBs offenses.

The NFL along with owners and coaches has spent years devising ways to protecting QBs on the field. QBs cost teams more money each year - The biggest problem for running QBs is they are a target - And one day they are not going to walk off the field.

It is only a matter of time before defensive coaches defeat the pistol offense / read-option schemes in the NFL. I believe it will be sooner than later. Most likely this year soon.

Just my opinion.

Its fair. I just think the league as a whole is going more progressive. I think the patriots started it when they started running more of a spread offense using principles from Chip Kelly. It was furthered by what the Redskins did last year with RG3, and then completely taken to another level by what they had to do with Kaepernick. I don't know if it is a trend, or a fad. Slowly, the traditional run game is being phased out, with the run game being less and less important. With the evolution at the qb position with Russell Wilson, Kaep, Andrew Luck, RG3, the position is athletic as it has ever been. I guess we will see.

If I'm a defensive coordinator and a team decides to run the read option on my defense, I'm likely going to have a guy unblocked that the offense is going to have to "option" off of.

I'm telling that guy to hit the QB, solidly, everytime. I don't even worry about the RB at that point, he can gain some yards. But I don't go for fakes, etc. I'm hitting the QB, and they can't flag that, he's a runner at that point.
