Who do you respect more as a leader?

Obama or Putin?

Simple choice.

You're talking about countries, not leaders. And Obama is doing a great job of reducing the degree to which countries look to the US for leadership.

He's weaker if he lost that negotiation. If he didn't lose that negotiation, it means he wasn't on the right side of it, which makes him a poor leader for a completely different reason.

If you have any ability to define and measure anything you're talking about, then we can move forward.

Otherwise, you're just pointing to a Rorsharch test.

This discussion is way too nebulous for me. I prefer to deal in concrete, measurable terms, rather than ideas like "leader" that go undefined that allow whomever to simply slap a label on something without having to substantially back it up.

You heard it here first, folks.

When two heads of state want the same thing, and sign a treaty to make it happen, one is a "winner," and another is a "loser."

Game set match, patteeu. I clearly never had a chance.

But give him this... he DOES have a bigger pair than Obama, being a cautious statesman is great, but once in a while you've got to smack some people around.

Ah! But more countries like Obama because he can be more easily rolled!

If countries like Obama more, it's because Obama is weak.

If countries liked Bush more, it's because Obama is weak.

This is why I hate discussions with no clear terms where the participants can just say shit without having to substantially back anything.

Actually, Putin's more popular in Russia than any American President has been in modern history. That's ****ing weird, but it's a true story. That is one legitimate area where he has Obama beat.

The second paragraph is just retreating back to the same nebulous fluff we've seen throughout this thread. The very idea that Obama hasn't "smacked people around" is laughable. And the idea that gassing defenseless prisoners somehow fits the definition of simply "smacking people around" is equally so.

Sorry, I didn't create the thread. Here's a concrete hypothetical for you to help you resolve your thoughts.

Given: In your opinion the US absolutely cannot tolerate an Iranian nuclear weapon. You have either Obama or Putin in charge and they've publicly declared that an Iranian nuclear weapon is unacceptable. You don't have to worry about how either man would impact the country in any way beyond that crisis.

Which guy do you want in charge making decisions wrt the Iranian situation? Which guy to you believe really means it when he draws a red line?

Those polls have no bearing on this issue. This isn't a popularity contest, it's a question of whether or not foreign governments look to the US for leadership. To the extent that they have during the Obama administration, they've been sorely disappointed with the result.
