The guy/gal on corner holding a sign..

Made the trip into the city this evening, had to go to a Best Buy for some new phones and the Apple store. Did dinner near the Plaza. Nice evening overall.

On the way, we saw two or three people with handwritten cardboard signs explaining in one way or another their individual plight and wanting a little financial consideration. In the car waiting for a stoplight they have numerous opportunities to plead their case.Looked like they were successful in a number of cases. I gave two of them a little help and they were appreciative.

My question for you folks who live and work in cities .....is this common in a lot of cities? What do you give them? Is it just change you have or do you give more like a 10 or a 20?

Do you think they are scamming people or are they on the up and up?

They're in most every city I've lived in. Once in a while I gave a guy up at the (I think) 12th Street exit ramp off 35 some change. Over near the Quality Hill area. He looked in bad shape to me.
I used to go inside a store and buy them a cold juice or Coke when I lived in DC, on hot days.

It's kind of funny, I never see them in the area where I live now, and then one day I see a guy holding a sign and begging and thought, "That's odd." Then I realized Jimmy Buffet was playing up the street at the FC Dallas stadium. I think he must have just figured he'd make some extra cash waiting for the show.
In Houston it seemed like they had to compete with these kids, like sports groups, who would always be all over the intersections asking for cash. They were more annoying than the homeless because they would walk up and down between the cars.

I have often wondered if there's a special Goodwill store or soup kitchen that makes those signs for the 'homeless'? jk

I know I always carry with me a sign-size heavy-duty piece of cardboard and a big black magic marker just in case I'm ever homeless. That would be the one and only thing I would ever need and certainly before food water and clothing.

I don't typically give them anything. I have seen 3 or 4 people team up to take all corners at an intersection. The way I see it if they can hold up a cardboard sign and beg they can hold up a sign advertising a business and get paid.

I think many of them are not as bad off as they want you to believe. I look over their clothes and shoes a truly homeless person will be pretty grungy. I once saw a guy that said he had a broken leg standing with one single crutch and no cast. He was on the corner for several days when I noticed him helping push a car out of the intersection.

I saw a guy another time with a sign that said "Why Lie I need a Beer" It was at an intersection leading to the beach. He received several beers!

If I give anything its food. Maybe some burgers from McD's

Absolutely nothing. Too many of them are addicts or alcoholics. I can't keep them from committing suicide, but I'm not going to help murder them.

I stopped at 69 highway and 135th street in south Overland Park and offered one a job. His sign read recently laid off, need help. He laughed and said he was holding out for a better job. I've seen the same guy a LOT out there holding this sign...like for the last year or so. I would have to say this one was a scammer. He at first told me he was a convicted felon and no one would give him a second chance..then refused the offer and wouldn't look at me.

Oh hell yes. These people would sit out in front of Wal Mart all day make bank and then be in front of me in the liquor store with a wad of ones that evening. The ones that need help I'd doubt you'd see them there too often.

Well to be fair, how long did you talk to him and what about? I don't know that I'd accept it either and I'm pretty damned hard up right now.

Zero. When I lived in Grandview, I would go to the grocery store the same time each Saturday morning . Each morning there was the same dude with a sign that read something to the effect of he and his family were stuck up here, and he needed money for gas.

Apparently he was stranded for 3 years because I saw him at the same corner each Saturday, and at various others.

They're drug users or alcoholics. End of story.

I was straight to the point, I said I can get you a job and he then stated he was a convicted felon..I said I'm the owner and I would like to help you out by offering a job starting at $10/hr. He basically told me he wasn't interested because he was overqualified.

Hmmm, overqualified convicted felon?

You might have explained to him that a felony isn't so much a qualification as it is a hindrance. I mean unless you were hiring a hit man or burglar.

That being said he was probably making $20 an hour sitting on the corner. Apparently a lack of pride is a lucrative endeavor.

That's why it appeared to me he was totally full of chit.

I've "helped" lots of people over the years. Filled gas tanks, bought fast food, bought food at the grocery store, hired to do work outside the house. When I was young I would give cash, but I haven't done that in years.

I've ran into lots of con artists, probably the most common situation.
I've had people do shitty yard work for me. They'd work for 2 hours, and I would have to work another 2 hours to do the job half right.
I've spent time and money trying to "save" people that were beyond my means to help. Their situation was just so messed up it was beyond my capacity to make better beyond meeting their immediate needs. No way could I even put a dent in their problems in the long run.
On a few rare occasions, I've managed to meet the immediate needs of a few people who were genuinely needy. I didn't feel like I was getting conned, I felt I was meeting someone's genuine immediate needs, they were appreciative, and overall it was a positive experience.

The most reliable way to help the truly needy is to volunteer through organizations that do this all the time. Serving food at a mission, habitat for humanity, donating to the foodbank etc.

If you try to help somone on a one on one situation, you face long odds of making a difference in a manner that is satisfactory to you. YMMV.
