The guy/gal on corner holding a sign..

Made the trip into the city this evening, had to go to a Best Buy for some new phones and the Apple store. Did dinner near the Plaza. Nice evening overall.

On the way, we saw two or three people with handwritten cardboard signs explaining in one way or another their individual plight and wanting a little financial consideration. In the car waiting for a stoplight they have numerous opportunities to plead their case.Looked like they were successful in a number of cases. I gave two of them a little help and they were appreciative.

My question for you folks who live and work in cities .....is this common in a lot of cities? What do you give them? Is it just change you have or do you give more like a 10 or a 20?

Do you think they are scamming people or are they on the up and up?

Wasn't there some story in the Star a while back about the ones on the plaza, and how they made a pretty decent income for the year, and they all had agreements about who was working where and when?

I live in a beach town and there are a ton of drifters here. For some reason though, they never bother anyone and I've never seen one panhandling. Maybe there's a law or something, I'm not sure, but they are all over the place so you'd expect to see it.

We had a guy pan handling in front of my old work place years ago. After I'd get off work I'd go have a beer and there sat that asshole with a monster roll of cash, plugging every bill into a keno machine and slamming Crown Sevens as fast as he could. Every day, it took all my energy not to go beat his ass

Now, I'll help someone broke down or pay for someone meal, but I don't hand out a dime.

I would guess 90+ percent are scams and yes, they are in every city I have ever been in with any size at all. There was a guy here in town that was here for over 4 years with the same sign. It claimed he was trying to "get enough money for a bus ticket to Seattle." (under $100 at the time) He must have been pulling in a decent haul, or he would have moved on sooner.

I know a guy who does this, typically off 71 and Emanuel Clever before he moved to Florida (I know, right). Anyway, light changes a couple 100 times a day, $1-5 every change, yeah, he did well enough to pay for his own apartment and go out every night. He'd call it flying a kite.

Sort of same topic. On Dallas Radio last night was a discussion of people who are joggers in a nice area of Dallas finding bums sleeping by the jogging paths. Seems these folks are discovering the nicer parks and are sleeping there. Pretty split discussion...those who were like they are all addicts/perverts/alcoholics/bums and should be run off to a more inclusive feel of they are people who need help and sleeping in a park is no crime that joggers should go around or past them and let them sleep.

People want to "help" until they wind up in their neighborhoods. The dollar given downtown becomes a call to the police near home.

do you think liberals have a different view of these folks than conservatives? Just comments here seem to say right may be the more sensitive to their plight

Was at a rest stop in Arizona once, there was a big old station wagon with a sign saying "Out of gas, family of 6, anything will help, God Bless". There was a coffee can on the hood. There was a little park and some kids playing. Looked pretty grungy. I assumed it was them, didn't see the adults anywhere.

Threw a 5.00 bill in the coffee can and left. Hope it helped.

Why should I give them money just to spend on drugs and booze when I need that money...for drugs and booze?

Truthfully, I see giving like this...it's not about them. It's about you. If you want to be a giver, give...and don't worry about what they're doing with the money. That's their problem.

I think the money is better spent on "random acts of (unsolicited) kindness" than beggars, but that's just me. I would rather help someone whom I notice is in a pinch than someone just sitting around begging, but it's ultimately about the giver.

If I see someone sleeping in the street I'll offer some help. On a corner with a sign? Very doubtful. And don't drag your kids along and make them sit in the hot sun with you!

My dad, Vietnam Vet, has approached a few and asked a few questions only to find they never served a day. Others that did serve, he'll hand them a couple bucks. Scammers work the heart strings with the Vet story, kids, and pets. Offer something other than money, if they turn you down, they're probably scam artists. Somebody with nothing, most times, won't turn down a meal, ride, drink, or a chance to earn a quick buck. Scammers don't want to leave they're spot because they probably found a lucrative spot..

I'm not saying this is the case with everyone, but it's true with the ones I've dealt with. I followed one guy home, he didn't live in a very nice house, but he had a nice truck than me and had an aluminum boat and rv parked on the lawn.

Living in the city I see no fewer than 5 panhandlers a day. I never give them anything unless I'm at Quiktrip and they ask for change

The guy I know is a stickler for his signage. Never claims to be homeless or unemployeed, just a sign asking for money. He leaves it up to the giver to assume whatever they will.

At the end of the day though, the guy is probably unemployable.
