The guy/gal on corner holding a sign..

Made the trip into the city this evening, had to go to a Best Buy for some new phones and the Apple store. Did dinner near the Plaza. Nice evening overall.

On the way, we saw two or three people with handwritten cardboard signs explaining in one way or another their individual plight and wanting a little financial consideration. In the car waiting for a stoplight they have numerous opportunities to plead their case.Looked like they were successful in a number of cases. I gave two of them a little help and they were appreciative.

My question for you folks who live and work in cities .....is this common in a lot of cities? What do you give them? Is it just change you have or do you give more like a 10 or a 20?

Do you think they are scamming people or are they on the up and up?

It's pretty much all been said already. I work in a downtown area so I pass at least three people a day on my walk to work. I'd be shocked if a penny of the money they're given goes to anything other than alcohol, tobacco, or drugs.

There have only been two times in Denver when I actually tried to help someone out, and both times they were scammers. Never again.

They're never a veteran.

I want to go up to these people sometimes and coach them. If you're going to claim that you're a veteran, don't say it was the 82nd Airborne. Everyone says they were in the 82nd Airborne. Go to the library and do a little research and pick something besides the 82nd Airborne. You can be a Navy or Air Force veteran if you want to mix things up, or you can claim that you're a veteran of Tarawa or Antietam. Most people aren't going to know. But they all know you're a liar when every stinking one of you claims to be in the 82nd Airborne.

Or just ask them their name and see if it matches the name on the army issue jacket they're wearing. No shit, my dad busted a guy this way because the jacket had our last name on it. Dad thought he might be related.

San Francisco is the best place in the country to be homeless as the city pays over 200 million a year to provide shelter, food, money and social programs to those that are. There should be zero homeless here yet half refuse shelter because you can't do drugs and booze there. What bugs me the most is when they are with kids who IMO should be taken from them if they cannot provide for them enough to keep them off the street. There are rare exceptions where I will see somebody really old or obviously very incapable of taking care of themselves where I will buy them something to eat. I never give them $$$$,

I get panhandled enough that I've finally started coming up with responses for them.

One common ruse is the old, "I just need 58 more cents for bus fare" or some such thing. A guy the other day gave me the perfect opening. He held out a hand with some change in it and said, "Got a nickel?" I said, "Oh, I couldn't possibly take your money." He had a poor sense of humor because he looked shocked and then said, "No! No! I'm not giving you money. I'm asking for money."

I also have a standard response for "Do you have any spare change?" My response as I walk by is "Yes."

Meh.

My outlook changed on panhandlers a few years ago. When i was homeless with my dad, we never panhandled, we always had clean clothes and we showered every day. Most major cities have programs for the homeless that give them meals and a place to wash yourself. ESPECIALLY in San Diego.

So when i'd see these nasty, dirty homeless people panhandling it would make me pissed. Having been there/done that, i KNOW that there is no reason for these people to be out begging for change or simply not taking care of themselves.

I hated homeless people for awhile because i thought they were all just lazy, disgusting shitheads. I would tell my wife, "Why would i give him my money? He's just going to use it on booze".

Then one day i saw a guy with a sign that said, "**** it. I aint gonna lie. I'ma use the money to buy beer & weed".

I said to myself, "Why am i Hating on this guy? That's what imma spend this money on too!"

Ever since then i actually go out of my way to give people change. Why not? It's just going to get lost in my couch or car seat any damn way.

"Here's some change dude. Have fun tonight"

Ill tell you what does piss me off (sort of not related)

I guess there is a new fad out; I've seen probably 4 or 5 kids wearing sort of old Army shirts (not sure what the Army refers to them as, but the button down ones); complete with ****ing ribbons on them.

I swear to god, I was so close to walking up to him and ripping off the ribbons.
**** that guy. My wife literally had to talk me out of it.

The smart ones should start using those cell phone-based credit card processors.

I wonder if that's a business idea. I could provide the equipment to them and then we split the proceeds.

Don't forget the Merchant services are gonna take their piece of the pie too though. There needs to a minimum of $5 or you get dinged with a $.50 processing fee. No Exceptions.

Yep, they're in every city. Most cities have various shelters, and they're often longer term residents who go out and panhandle every day. There's one guy at South Station here in Boston that has been out there EVERY business day for many, many years. In one respect, you have to admire the dedication -- I've seen many employees who can't show up to work that regularly...

I've never given him a dime, or almost anyone else, for the same reasons others have stated -- I'm not going to help them with a drug/alcohol habit. Some look pretty clean, and have signs that specify that they're clean, recently unemployed, etc.

I did give last weekend, thouhg -- first time in many, many years. Outside a SUBURBAN mall (where there are never panhandlers) was a guy with a sign that said something like "recently laid off, wife and 2 kids, clean, please help."

That, alone, would not have gotten him anything from me, BUT THE WIFE AND TWO KIDS WERE THERE!! We drove by them and my family was talking about it for a while. We wondered whether the woman and kids were "props", but damn, it takes alot of . . . something . . . to sit out there in that kind of setting and panhandle. We went a bit out of our way to go back and give him $5.00. The kids were definitely putting the heat on to help out -- they felt terrible seeing two young kids (4 and 2, maybe?) out there, etc. so that overcame any reluctance we had.

Normally we give through known charitable organizations, since you can feel more confident that the money doesn't end up at the bottom of a bottle, or a syringe.
