The guy/gal on corner holding a sign..

Made the trip into the city this evening, had to go to a Best Buy for some new phones and the Apple store. Did dinner near the Plaza. Nice evening overall.

On the way, we saw two or three people with handwritten cardboard signs explaining in one way or another their individual plight and wanting a little financial consideration. In the car waiting for a stoplight they have numerous opportunities to plead their case.Looked like they were successful in a number of cases. I gave two of them a little help and they were appreciative.

My question for you folks who live and work in cities .....is this common in a lot of cities? What do you give them? Is it just change you have or do you give more like a 10 or a 20?

Do you think they are scamming people or are they on the up and up?

Here dude, have some change and go get drunk before you die from hepatitis or something.
And that behavior just encourages more of the same from them. They have food and shelter already. Some guy hits me up right outside the door to my building. I told him I spend a fortune to be in this building and the last thing I want is somebody feeling they have the right to set up shop right outside my front door. I would have to be crazy to give you money.

In one respect, you have to admire the dedication -- I've seen many employees who can't show up to work that regularly...

I've never given him a dime, or almost anyone else, for the same reasons others have stated -- I'm not going to help them with a drug/alcohol habit. Some look pretty clean, and have signs that specify that they're clean, recently unemployed, etc.

I did give last weekend, thouhg -- first time in many, many years. Outside a SUBURBAN mall (where there are never panhandlers) was a guy with a sign that said something like "recently laid off, wife and 2 kids, clean, please help."

That, alone, would not have gotten him anything from me, BUT THE WIFE AND TWO KIDS WERE THERE!! We drove by them and my family was talking about it for a while. We wondered whether the woman and kids were "props", but damn, it takes alot of . . . something . . . to sit out there in that kind of setting and panhandle. We went a bit out of our way to go back and give him $5.00. The kids were definitely putting the heat on to help out -- they felt terrible seeing two young kids (4 and 2, maybe?) out there, etc. so that overcame any reluctance we had.

Normally we give through known charitable organizations, since you can feel more confident that the money doesn't end up at the bottom of a bottle, or a syringe.
The kid thing is BS.

Semi-scam. If they are well enough to stand there and beg then they are well enough to do landscaping work or some other actual job. Go stand outside the corner by home depot and advertise to do odd jobs or something. Don't just stand there and beg.

I give handouts to bums about as often as you think I do.

Working in downtown Chicago I've become totally desensitized to it. They're not on every corner, but I pass several on the way to and from the train station to my office. The cops crack down on the ones that are aggressive fairly quickly, so they generally won't bother you too much. And frankly they're less annoying than those Greenpeace/Christian Childrens assholes that always want to **** with you when you're running late to catch the train. Although at least they don't smell bad.

Yes it is common. Every f'ing day I deal with this crap. People wandering the streets like wildlife ratting cups with signs about their life story. Or riding the metro and it is the same five dudes on the same spots on my way to and from work every day for the past 10 years.

I give them two things. Jack and shit. Just like the sign says in Yellowstone, don't feed the bears. Same principle applies here. If you're tossing them change you're feeding the problem.

Where's Loneiguana to tell us that the economy would explode if we all gave every bum $100?

I would really question whether the majority of people who give money would otherwise spend it on booze or drugs. And even if that were the case, the giver actually worked for that money in order to have the ability to purchase something unnecessary like booze or drugs. The panhandler did not. As has been pointed out, homeless people have many assistance programs available to them to provide their necessities. They panhandle for money for unnecessary things, usually drugs, booze, and smokes. You're only feeding their unnecessary addictions. Addictions which ultimately prevent them from changing their ways and trying to provide for themselves.

I drive through the Plaza every day, where most of the panhandlers work. I see the same group that's been around for 4-5 years. Countless times, I've seen them end up at the Quicktrip just down Main, where they spend their day's money on cheap beer and smokes. Then they head back down to the Plaza and get drunk and high the rest of the day down by the river. Repeat the next day. Is that really the behavior you want to encourage? What you're providing isn't really helping them in any positive way, and in most cases it's enabling the things that prevent them from being productive members of society.

This is such a conundrum. People, myself included, really do want to help people in need, but there are alot of reasons to be jaded about the various possibilities. I have worked for several charities as a volunteer, and during high school and college as a fund raiser, but now I wish I never had done the fund raising. It is way too hard to find out how much of donors' money goes to real aid and how much is swallowed by the charity fund raising machine. They have accountants who are just as creative as other industries who can make it look like they are very efficient just by reporting things a little bit differently.

On the other hand I know I am unable to truly tell who is a scam and who is genuine on street corners. I have often focused instead on people I know who are down on their luck which hasn't been that hard to find these last few years, or direct suppliers to needy like food banks and cloth diaper drives. Food banks need so much, and they are very appreciative of a few bags of goods.

I don't really know if that works better or not, but I am just so sour on the fund raisers and panhandlers. I still give occasionally because I have hope that people are not scammers, but I still get sad about it. The food bank is what I do most, because I haven't found a reason to be jaded about it so far.

I hardly ever see any panhandlers out here in Olathe. But when I do see them, I tend to think they're actually homeless. They usually look pretty grungy, unshaven, with worn out clothes and shoes, and a large backpack or duffle bag. I've never given them any money, though.

When I was living in Chula Vista(suburb of San Diego) those damn panhandlers were everywhere. It seemed like every major highway off ramp had a "homeless" guy begging for money.

And I ran into quite a few while walking into the grocery store, which kind of shocked me. I never expected to get solicited while shopping for food. They would always feed me a sob story, saying they need money for this or that. I never believed a word they said.

I think I became desensitized after seeing so many of them in the San Diego area. The overwhelming majority of them were full of shit. The scammers ruin it for the ones that genuinely need help.

I've been to chi-town and cali and never give a dime to these panhandlers. The few I've seen in Olathe look like dirt and a few have in their possession a camouflaged cortex/jacket. As a vet, I could could give 2 ****s if they served and are currently sitting on a corner. However, If I'm at the grocery store and I got a 80-year old lady pulling out her change purse... I'll gladly assist with her payment.

That's a good point. I'd rather have the panhandlers than those horrible, horrible street solicitors. The street solicitors are far more aggressive. In Denver we have Greenpeace and Planned Parenthood and some sort of "Save the Children" group and they're everywhere. They find out about any event in Denver and send their thugs to bother and annoy people on the street in front of it. They are truly the lice and vermin of the nonprofit world, and those organizations will never get a penny from me as a result. I'll give it to the panhandlers for meth before I'll give these organizations money.

How about someone asks for some food or a new pair of shoes or some new clothes for their kid? I'd think that was legit and I'd probably help them in that way. But cahs? No. F U money grubbing POSs.
