Area 51 CIA The CIA Has Finally Confirmed That Area 51 Exists

http://www.businessinsider.com/cia-a...is-real-2013-8

LAS VEGAS (AP) The CIA is acknowledging the existence of Area 51 in newly declassified documents.

George Washington University's National Security Archive obtained a CIA history of the U-2 spy plane program through a public records request and released it Thursday.

National Security Archive senior fellow Jeffrey Richelson reviewed the history in 2002, but all mentions of Area 51 had been redacted.

Richelson says he requested the history again in 2005 and received a version a few weeks ago with mentions of Area 51 restored.

Officials have already acknowledged in passing the existence of the facility in central Nevada where the government is believed to test intelligence tools and weapons.

Richelson believes the new document shows the CIA is becoming less secretive about Area 51's existence, if not about what goes on there.

Interesting - but this was everything we already knew about the place. They used it to test experimental aircraft.

I read another time that they would take stolen Soviet aircraft there to test them and develop strategies for training our pilots to fly against them, it was interesting stuff.

Don' think this is any great surprise or unknown: It has been postulated that 1 of the main uses of the box was for work with soviet and "grey" aircraft. As a former operational test flight director at NWC China Lake (two valleys over) in the 1980s, I have a couple of logbook entries that are void of aircraft type, model or series. I offered the contact info a while back for any so inclined to fly in:

the 'museum' at Nellis is cool. I was able to sit in quite a few FSU aircraft. MiG 19, and 21. Also a Hind Helicopter.

was able to see a working SA-2 TA radar. Sitting in it was cool as it was tracking our aircraft during Red Flag ops. all the gauges/labels etc were in Russian. Very very cool.

This place runs on half-truths and assumptions like a race engine on methanol.

little known fact. Methanol was engineered at Area 51 to power alien aircraft.

Realizing we are bored with this topic, I remembered a book that may be of interest to those few that seemed to want more info earlier, while I wasn't sure of the classification today:

Red Eagles: America's Secret MiGs

"When two Navy F-14 Tomcats engaged and shot down two Sukhoi Su-22 jet fighters in 1981, they drew on experience and tactics that they had learned from a previous encounter with MiG jet fighters. (Yet my Navy buddies screwed up thier switchology (switch-pig in the language of the day) and didn't initially arm thier Sidewinders: exactly how we trained during TACTS range ACM work) The difference between the two encounters was that in the first, the enemy fighters were flown by American pilots assigned to a top secret squadron hidden at a remote airfield in the ultra-secret Tonopah Nuclear Test range, Nevada. In the second, the Sukhoi fighters were flown by Libyan pilots attempting to enforce Colonel Qadaffi's 'Line of Death' over the Gulf of Sidra.

From the mid-1960s until the end of the Cold War, the United States Air Force acquired and flew Russian-made MiG jets, eventually creating a secret squadron dedicated to exposing American fighter pilots to enemy MiGs. Following underperformance in the Vietnam War, the USAF began to study MiGs in order to improve fighter pilot training. This then developed into the "black" Constant Peg program. In this program, MiGs were secretly acquired, and made airworthy, a difficult task without manuals or parts. A secret base was found to operate the planes from; and then ace pilots were found and trained to not only fly the assets, but fly them as they were flown by America's enemies. Finally, a program of exposing American fighter pilots to the MiGs was developed. In all, more than 1,600 American fighter pilots would train against America's secret MiGs between 1974 and 1989.

Uncovering the story of the secret MiGs in America during the Cold War, and specifically Constant Peg and the 4477th Test & Evaluation Squadron, is a challenge because much of the information has been destroyed, or remains classified. To piece together the story of this group of men who provided America's fighter pilots with a level of training that was the stuff of dreams, author Steve Davies has interviewed over thirty of the Red Eagle pilots, along with other members of the squadron. This paperback edition includes new material on HAVE IDEA and other HAVE programs; making the MiGs airworthy in 1977 from the maintainers' perspective; and the intelligence activities of MiG expert at the Foreign Technology Division Mike Coyle. The result is a fascinating glimpse into a "black" program that enabled American fighter pilots to go into combat having already met and defeated their first MiG."
