Identical Twin Studies Prove Homosexuality is Not Genetic

This should be a fun thread!

http://www.orthodoxytoday.org/blog/2...s-not-genetic/

Quote:
Eight major studies of identical twins in Australia, the U.S., and Scandinavia during the last two decades all arrive at the same conclusion: gays were not born that way.

“At best genetics is a minor factor,” says Dr. Neil Whitehead, PhD. Whitehead worked for the New Zealand government as a scientific researcher for 24 years, then spent four years working for the United Nations and International Atomic Energy Agency. Most recently, he serves as a consultant to Japanese universities about the effects of radiation exposure. His PhD is in biochemistry and statistics.

Identical twins have the same genes or DNA. They are nurtured in equal prenatal conditions. If homosexuality is caused by genetics or prenatal conditions and one twin is gay, the co-twin should also be gay.

“Because they have identical DNA, it ought to be 100%,” Dr. Whitehead notes. But the studies reveal something else. “If an identical twin has same-sex attraction the chances the co-twin has it are only about 11% for men and 14% for women.”

Because identical twins are always genetically identical, homosexuality cannot be genetically dictated.

“No-one is born gay,” he notes. “The predominant things that create homosexuality in one identical twin and not in the other have to be post-birth factors.”

Dr. Whitehead believes same-sex attraction (SSA) is caused by “non-shared factors,” things happening to one twin but not the other, or a personal response to an event by one of the twins and not the other.

For example, one twin might have exposure to pornography or sexual abuse, but not the other. One twin may interpret and respond to their family or classroom environment differently than the other.

“These individual and idiosyncratic responses to random events and to common environmental factors predominate,” he says.

The first very large, reliable study of identical twins was conducted in Australia in 1991, followed by a large U.S. study about 1997. Then Australia and the U.S. conducted more twin studies in 2000, followed by several studies in Scandinavia, according to Dr. Whitehead.

“Twin registers are the foundation of modern twin studies. They are now very large, and exist in many countries. A gigantic European twin register with a projected 600,000 members is being organized, but one of the largest in use is in Australia, with more than 25,000 twins on the books.”

A significant twin study among adolescents shows an even weaker genetic correlation. In 2002 Bearman and Brueckner studied tens of thousands of adolescent students in the U.S. The same-sex attraction concordance between identical twins was only 7.7% for males and 5.3% for females—lower than the 11% and 14% in the Australian study by Bailey et al conducted in 2000.

In the identical twin studies, Dr. Whitehead has been struck by how fluid and changeable sexual identity can be.

“Neutral academic surveys show there is substantial change. About half of the homosexual/bisexual population (in a non-therapeutic environment) moves towards heterosexuality over a lifetime. About 3% of the present heterosexual population once firmly believed themselves to be homosexual or bisexual.”

“Sexual orientation is not set in concrete,” he notes.

Amazon Women on the moon clearly shows the moon IS made of cheese, even though Will Ferrell was a wee little lad at that point in time.

Of course he does. Think about some kind of behavior you think is wrong, e.g. theft, fraud, child abuse, driving on the wrong side of the road, etc. Do you have a right to (try to influence government to) discriminate against people who behave in these ways?

The proper course of action, IMO, is to ignore them completely. I don't really give a shit what they do or what they think. But to your point about the political ramifications of their burgeoning "equality" - too late. Doesn't matter anymore, folks like you gave up on the issue so you could get along with Democrats. Never fully realizing what their end game was. (Same with Frazod)

So now that they've won, expect the full boatload of political gimmes that are coming down the pike. But when they do, don't blame me. Blame yoruself and Frazod.

That's idiotic. I haven't given up on any issue. I've been in favor of same sex marriage longer than I've been a member of this board. Longer than most democrats have publicly favored it, I might add.

Are you really trying to equate homosexuality with these crimes?

It is hard to take this discussion seriously when people do shit like this.

It's comparable in that it using the machinery of government to alter or prohibit citizen's behaviors.

Would you prefer prostitution, personal drug use and drinking age laws?

There are things that should be illegal, of course, but what I am talking about is laws that try to change behaviors like homosexuality, smoking (in my state they have tried to force people to quit using a combination of extremely high taxes - cigarettes cost $9 a pack - and making it nearly impossible to smoke anywhere outside your home), banning or severely restricting strip clubs and porn, etc.

And yes, I think prostitution should be legal and the drinking age should be 18. It is terrible that we can ask an 18 year old to go fight and potentially die in a war for us, but if he comes back alive we don't allow him to drink.

Surely you are smart enough to see the difference between these things and theft, murder, etc., right?

No, I didn't say anything about "equating". Why would you ask?

And before you continue down this path, I'm not equating driving on the wrong side of the road with child abuse either.

What I am saying is that you are almost surely willing to impose your values on society. Why should a religious person not be able to do the same?

I didn't say you gave up on gay marriage at all. I said that you gave up on the gay agenda as a political issue. Once you crossed over to supporting gay marriage (or even if you always did support it), you went over to the Left and supported all the treasure-trove of political goodies coming their way.

Let me be clear. I'm tolerant of religious people, but I think you, in particular, are a bigot of the Fred Phelps variety.

I am an ally of convenience with most religious conservatives, because we have common cause in the defense of our constitution and because many of them share *my* conservative views on such non-religious issues as taxes, government's relationship with business, and national security.

I don't apologize for being in favor of same sex marriage, but I'm tolerant of people who believe that treating opposite sex marriage as special above all other relationships is the best way to encourage stable families for kids. I'm not so tolerant of people who oppose same sex marriage just because they dislike gays (which seems to be the case with you).

I haven't ever adopted the left's position that same sex marriage is a right guaranteed by the constitution (which is where "all the treasure-trove of political goodies" are found). I oppose that perversion of our foundational document. I encourage thinking conservatives* to accept some middle ground where same sex couples can achieve a civil marriage created by legislation (while finding a way to preserve the ability of churches to define religious marriage as they see fit) because if we don't do that, judges will eventually force the issue by re-interpreting the 14th amendment again AND because it's the right thing to do.
