UPS DRopping Spouses From Insurance Coverage, Cites "Obamacare"

UPS to drop 15,000 spouses from health insurance, cites Obamacare

United Parcel Service plans to remove thousands of spouses from its medical plan because they are eligible for coverage elsewhere. The Atlanta-based shipping and logistics company points to the federal Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, as a big reason for the decision, reports Kaiser Health News. According to Kaiser, UPS told white-collar workers two months ago that 15,000 working spouses eligible for coverage by their own employers would be excluded from the UPS plan in 2014.

If UPS did this to the Union folks it would be a violation not only of the contract but of federal labor law. They would have to negotiate the effects of this "change in conditions" before implementation. The national UPS negotiations were completed a couple months ago and this was not on the table or agreed to. UPS, in most cases, contribute to a "trust" which administers the benefits for their union employees.

I believe this would be for non represented managers or other workers not represented by a union.

Yes, these are non-union workers being affected, I believe.

Unions complained a lot about this in 2009 but ultimately supported Obamacare out of a sense of loyalty and hope they could change things later. Expect to see a lot of complaints and lobbying against this part of Obamacare by big unions in the coming year.

Congress shouldn't give in, though, its a good provision for controlling costs and it was also part of Paul Ryan's health care proposal.
The Cadillac plans call for the medical portion of a Health and Welfare plan to cost more than $27,500 per year. That does not count dental, vision or any other ancillary benefit. In my area the cost for the UPS medical, which is as good as any plan I know of, and far superior to most, is about $1,100.00 per monthX 12 months equals about $13,200 per year. If the cost get to $27,500 per year there are much bigger problems that the Cadillac tax.

I'm pretty sure you get my point. We continue trying to pick the lesser of two evils, rather than finding a solution to the problem. We've become slaves. But I've done this a thousand times and it always feels like a waste of time and energy, so I'll just back out and let you all remain angry over this, or that.

For the moment.

Of course, this system was designed to fail so we can expect more companies to do it and with a wider swathe

I am right there with you. I am also tired of "having" to have a lesser of 2 evils approach when I vote. Let's get real here because I think most would agree that they all flat out suck!!!!! Do I like Republicans? No, because I think they cater to the wealthy and to corporations more than to the average Joe, but the Dems are liars and only seem to care about middle class citizens when it suits their needs.

As soon as we all get it, we'll have a better chance of figuring out how to do DO something about it!

People could help themselves out a lot more, though if they "got it" by looking in the mirror, too. I'm not saying this goes for everyone but a lot of people create their own financial problems. They drive a car way too expensive for what they make, they have a phone with a plan that should be considered a luxury, they pay $125 a month in cable, they eat out, have a house that's too expensive, etc.
Like I said it's not everyone, but it's a lot. I used to work in consumer credit and I was shocked at how poorly people budgeted their income. Nice automobiles was the biggest unnecesary expense, but there were many.

The world isn't going to go backwards. Businesses aren't going to become more empathetic, and government isn't going to solve people's problems. I think people need to grasp that and try to become more aware of how to manage their finances.

This is true, but the number you cite is for a family. For individuals the cadillac tax starts at $10,200. It also doesn't kick in for 4 years, and firms are forward looking. The past 25 years we have experienced extremely rapid growth in the cost of health care, now, this has in fact slowed sharply in the past couple of years but unless that lasts, when the cadillac tax is implemented $27,500 will buy a lot less than it does today.

Forgive me for not being clear but I thought I had implied that the UPS plan I was referring to was a family plan because the topic is UPS dropping spouses from their plan. so, just to be clear, the costs stated above are for "family" plans.
