UPS DRopping Spouses From Insurance Coverage, Cites "Obamacare"

UPS to drop 15,000 spouses from health insurance, cites Obamacare

United Parcel Service plans to remove thousands of spouses from its medical plan because they are eligible for coverage elsewhere. The Atlanta-based shipping and logistics company points to the federal Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, as a big reason for the decision, reports Kaiser Health News. According to Kaiser, UPS told white-collar workers two months ago that 15,000 working spouses eligible for coverage by their own employers would be excluded from the UPS plan in 2014.

What purpose does it serve to impose an excise tax on high cost insurance plans?

Mammycare is certainly doing its damage. I would be willing to bet that some businesses will drop spousal coverage for another reason entirely as same sex marriage expands.

Like I said it's not everyone, but it's a lot. I used to work in consumer credit and I was shocked at how poorly people budgeted their income. Nice automobiles was the biggest unnecesary expense, but there were many.

The world isn't going to go backwards. Businesses aren't going to become more empathetic, and government isn't going to solve people's problems. I think people need to grasp that and try to become more aware of how to manage their finances.
You're absolutely right. There's no doubt about that. People have no idea how to budget their finances. That said, it doesn't invalidate my points in this thread. We should all be doing better, and spending even more money irresponsibly.

I RARELY wade into this filth ridden cesspool but did ANY of you people actually READ the article?

UPS is no longer offering coverage for spouses who qualify for health insurance ELSEWHERE. Children dependents are still eligible.

Personally, I've often wondered why this hasn't been corporate policy. Back in the day, my wife's insurance coverage was far less than mine, so Paramount footed the bill for both of us.

In the long run, the idea is to have health coverage and if corporations such as UPS make policies like this, it's all good.

Yep, read the article. It's interesting to me that a large company is deciding not to even give its employees the choice to add their spouses to their plans. And that they seem to be specifically using "Obamacare" as an excuse. This chunk of the article got my attention:

Rising medical costs, “combined with the costs associated with the Affordable Care Act, have made it increasingly difficult to continue providing the same level of health care benefits to our employees at an affordable cost,” UPS said in a memo to employees.

Propaganda? Harsh economic reality? A sign of a troubled health care system? All of the above? I'm not sure. I have covered my spouse and children (when appropriate) on a company plan since around 1990 or so. I'd have to say I took it for granted really.

Not sure this is an issue. My insurance always said if wife unit had coverage she was not covered by my employer and same for hers.

UPS has said it will save them $60 million per year, so I'd have to go with "economic".

Personally, I think it has absolutely nothing to do with Obamacare and is just an excuse for them to reduce costs and earn more profit.

Well, sure. They have to make business decisions. And if this policy really is too harsh then they will lose employees in the long run, but I don't think that's going to happen. I do wonder if this is going to be the new "normal" for health care coverage at work.

It's just an excuse. "Hey guys, let's reduce $60 million in expenses and blame it on the government!".

I think UPS ****ing sucks. I remember as a kid that they only hired part-time employees on the loading docks because they didn't want to pay for health insurance for full-timers.

I got a part time job at Deluxe Checks (which paid $7 per hour) and one of the guys there worked at UPS part time, also, which paid $8 dollars an hour. So between the two jobs, he had 40 hours a week of work but no benefits.

UPS paid overtime during the holiday season but never gave benefits of any kind unless you were a driver or worked in corporate.

Nah. Children are covered. Husband/Wife is covered if they don't have a job. Nothing to quit over.

Yeah. This is what it looks like.

That does ****ing suck. I've seen several articles hinting that this kind of employment is taking over, that temp jobs and part time work is making up a larger and larger chunk of available employment. I think someone posted one here in DC a while back. That a temp agency is our #2 national employer (just checked, it's true: Kelley Services) behind Wal Mart. That's sad.

I took the "coverage from elsewhere" to mean that UPS is implying that spouses can use Obamacare, so spouses don't need to be added to employee plans.

Hmm. I took it mean dual income households in which insurance is offered by both employers.
