DOes the congress need to declare war before military action in Syria?

Simple question:

Does the congress need to declare war on the official Government inSyria before we hit them with our missiles and Air Force...

Or should the president be able to attack another country without this authorization?

(poll coming)

The answer to the question is basically no. Right now a declaration of war only activates the crimes of treason and sedition, and is otherwise irrelevant. The question is NOT "should congress need to declare war" it is "do they need to declare war". Every single person who voted yes is just obviously wrong.

Congress can only stop the president by de-funding the military or by removing him from office. If they hand over the money and don't impeach him, then the president can basically do anything he wants with the military. The War Powers Act would probably not survive a constitutional challenge and in any case the army will not disobey the president anyway, so we can disregard that law.

When you vote for a president, you should not presume that congress will check his power as commander in chief. If we vote in a hawk, he'll probably get us involved in a war.

The only purpose of an authorization vote in congress is for political cover, thats it.

edit: the only way this will change, aside from a constitutional amendment, is if we elect a long, unbroken string of presidents over the next several decades who all act as if they need authorization and all respect the will of congress if they lose. If that happens, then eventually the culture at the top of the military could evolve to the point where they don't recognize an order from the president to go to war without congressional backing. That is not the reality today. If congress held a vote to authorize action and that vote failed, and Obama turned to the military and said "screw it, lets go anyway", the military will salute and carry out the orders to bomb Syria.

It's hilarious how Obama has bungled this. He's obviously painted himself into a corner and is trying to weasel out of it. It just shows how his "red lines" words were nothing more than empty threats.

I don't want us to attack at all, but it's just incredibly amusing how inept this administration is on foreign policy.

Can you make the GOP angry on demand?

The conservative media can.

Looking forward to the coming back and forth between the Neocons and isolationist libertarians in the fractured "my own worst enemy" GOP.

No, I'm saying we (by which I mean you and the rest of the majority who voted for Obama) voted for international weakness and a lack of leadership and that's what we got. Thanks, JDiddy.

Like it or not, this decision isn't the make or break factor in the test of his strength and leadership. That ship has sailed. This is just the most recent example.

What should he have done in this case to show his leadership skills? Nothing?

It will be some black comedy I'm sure to see the schizophrenia of everyone arguing over what conservative really means.

It's definitely more challenging than just being for whatever Obama is for at the moment.

Poor Pat. His party is fractured and spineless on the outside looking in so he has to create fake narratives where the answer is always Obama being the weak one. The information matters little his conclusion is the same.

He shouldn't have drawn a red line that he couldn't back up. He shouldn't have dithered while al Qaeda and other anti-western Islamists gained more power within the opposition. He shouldn't have put himself and our country into a situation where there aren't any good choices. He's a trainwreck.
