The History of Labor Day

In 1882, Matthew Maguire, a machinist, first proposed the holiday while serving as secretary of the CLU (Central Labor Union) of New York.

Others argue that it was first proposed by Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor in May 1882, after witnessing the annual labour festival held in Toronto, Canada. Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday on February 21, 1887. By the time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day.

Following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, the United States Congress unanimously voted to approve rush legislation that made Labor Day a national holiday; President Grover Cleveland signed it into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.

The September date originally chosen by the CLU of New York and observed by many of the nation's trade unions for the past several years was selected rather than the more widespread International Workers' Day because Cleveland was concerned that observance of the latter would be associated with the nascent Communist, Syndicalist and Anarchist movements that, though distinct from one another, had rallied to commemorate the Haymarket Affair in International Workers' Day.

All U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the territories have made it a statutory holiday.

So weird how "big labor" is behind immigration amnesty. Truly bizarro world crap going on there. I guess like the Catholic Church, they're trying to find any warm bodies they can to re-plenish their pews. Anybody concerned with labor this year and the lack of jobs should stop and ask why Congress is actually considering legalizing millions more employees to compete with them.

I wonder if blacks will ever get the picture on their total displacement by Hispanics both politically and in the jobs market, but they're too worried about Trayvon's hoody to consider the concept.

Our first worker's revolution holiday which nearly was going to be held on May Day with all the other communist countries. Due to that connection it was changed.

Or maybe labor recognizes the problems of having a large chunk of the work force categorized as second class citizens (illegals) who are exploited by those that hire them.

You ever stop and wonder why there is a demand for illegal labor?

Sure, employers want cheap abused labor. Which is exactly why big labor should oppose all immigration in order to cut supply and necessitate higher competition for workers.

This isn't rocket science iguana.

It has taken me a while but I finally figured you out. You're the type of person that likes to assign people to groups (as long as your group hierarchy includes you being on top somehow, someway). Let me dispel that notion.

I don't care if you make 10 cents a year or a million, but your elitist attitude to all things not you puts you very low on the totum poll. You walk around like you are the big shit, but yet, are far from it.

In short your entire existence revolves around this gigantic myth that you are the coolest poster on a football bulletin board of which you have nothing in common with.

In essence, I view you as an uncompassionate, ignorant, miserable excuse for a human being and I hope that each and every day when you put on your superiority pants that you get your (obviously tiny) frank and beans caught in your zipper.

The thinking is they can flood the voter pool with millions of Democrats so they can force change politically. This is o course destined to fail as employers will do whatever they want anyway with respect to hiring decisions - see Obamacare.

Um, the fact that they are illegal is why the are abused and under paid.

legalizing them takes that ability away from companies.

You actually want to do something about immigration, go after the companies that create a demand for illegals by hiring them.

Wrong.

The people who would be hurt the most are the large companies that hire them at third world country wages.

Legalizing them or cracking down on companies that hire illegals will allow the American worker to compete by taking away the financial incentive to hire illegal labor.

No repeal birthright citizenship and go after welfare entitlements which won't lure them as much.
Fact is both the progressive-socialist-commie left and corporations benefit from illegal immigrant labor. The former for more voters and thus more power
to transform the country to a socialist state the latter to save money. The former is far more evil and destructive.
