There should be a great many people embarrassed to be associated with either of the two major parties. They have a stranglehold on the electoral process, having had a duopoly for the last 100 years or so and as such, are responsible for the sorry manner in which the Government has governed.
A government that is less prone to intervening in the affairs of other countries and the personal lives of our fellow citizens is at the core of Libertarian philosophy. There are still a great many people that wish to live their lives as they see fit and, to allow others to do the same. Particularly if they are not asked to subsidize those countries unwilling to pay for their own defense and those individuals unwilling to do the work necessary to live the life they feel they are entitled to.
There are of course jobs so big and important that a certain pooling of resources is necessary to achieve the task but, a leaner, smaller, less parasitic government sounds pretty good to me.

I agree. But I'd like to see the party lean libertarian instead of pulling from the extremes. I think your post hits the right tone. There comes a point where a party becomes so polarizing and challenging, that they get nothing done. What good is principle if you don't have the negotiations savvy to turn principles into action?

That's the problem I see. I've seen conservatives that are celebrating their recent record of resistance in Congress. Blind to how much damage they are doing to the party reputation. if

If the libertarians do end up replacing the GOP as our second party, we would end up with an even more lunatic extreme whackjob opposition to the Dems--and that would really suck. Dems without ANY effective opposition party would, indeed, be a disaster.

Level headed libertarians would pull in a lot of dems.

You could see 3 distinct repub groups....

Tea Party - reserved for old people that are angry because the TV told them they should be.
NeoCons - We have a military so we should probably be using it in as many places as possible and as often as we can. And be sure to give every large corporation in the country and month hand job while ****ing everyone in the ass.
Libertarians - Cut spending and mind your own business.

I personally have been leaning more and more libertarian as I get older. But any party that runs out the mildly retarded (Todd Aiken types) isn't going to get my vote.

It sucks now. Other than a bunch of different hot air I really donít see the Republicans being an effective counterbalance to the Democrat party. It is just a matter of each side trying to claim the moral high on social issues while spending our children and grandchildren down the economic sewer.
I think it would be hilarious to see the reaction from congress if someone actually proposed a real spending cut instead of and reduction in the size of the increase. At some point we are going to have no choice but acknowledge there needs to be a relationship between revenue and expenditures.

Because that's their only chance to ever win another national election.

the Republicans are in a demographic death spiral for good reason. They have lurched too far too the right. Same issue the Democrats did when they lurched left in the 70's. Either the Republicans go back to the center or its over on the national scale just like it was for the Democrats until they came back to the middle.

Assuming you're right BigRed and I assume you are, I have to ask what happened to the centrist Democrat? As you know, Clinton's DLC has been disbanded and there aren't many blue dogs left in your party. Have they given up on being centrists?

Oh, ok. What platform will she run on that differs from Obama? I'm curious to know.

No idea. I'm not a fan.

I wasn't saying she's a centrist, just that she will run as one. Just like the conservative will run as a centrist but will be to the right. It's just the way the game is played and the public likes it that way or it would change.
