Only 10,000 fans show up for critical Rays/Rangers game

Pathetic........how long can Tampa support this franchise?

http://www.inquisitr.com/954233/tamp...ainst-rangers/

The Tampa Bay Rays opened a critical three game series against the Texas Rangers Monday night at home. Fans showed up in pathetic numbers to support their possibly playoff bound team.

The Rays have always had attendance issues. Their ballpark, Tropicana Field, is an eyesore and the team consistently loses free agents to higher payroll clubs. Yet somehow, year after year, the Rays find a way to win.

Isnít winning supposed to translate increased attendance? Apparently not. On Monday night the Rays beat the Rangers in a critical series opener 6-2. Only 10,724 fans showed up.

A few years ago attendance was so low during a playoff run the Rays gave out free tickets to fill up the stadium.

Since 2008, the Rays have been the to World Series and won the NL East twice. Theyíve had a winning record every season and have always been one of the more exciting teams to watch. Over the same period the average attendance has been around 20,000. Tropicana Field holds 42,000 people.

The Tampa Bay Rays attendance was so pathetic Monday night they couldnít even fill one-quarter of their ballpark. The team currently leads the wildcard standings by one game!

Sadly, the Rays attendance problem might be a result of Tropicana Field. Originally built for the San Francisco Giants in the early 90′s, the ballpark stayed dormant until the Rays first game in 1998.

Tropicana Field is widely considered one of the worst stadiums in all of baseball. It even rivals Oakland Coliseum, home of the Athletics. The Aís ballpark opened in 1966. Like Tampa Bay, Oakland barely averages 20,000 fans a game.

The Rays need a new ballpark. There have been discussion ongoing since 2007. So far nothing has come to fruition. The teamís current lease at Tropicana Field runs through 2027 and St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster insists the Rays have to play out the terms.

Do you think the Rays pathetic attendance numbers are because of Tropicana Field?

True. But I'm guessing Tampa is slightly bigger than KC area?

Anyhow, I've thought for awhile now tv coverage hurts gate attendance. There are too many home games broadcast on local TV. It didn't used to be that way.

Idk, doesn't seem to be hurting attendance for the large markets. KU basketball is on tv every game and yet their home games an hour away from kc are always packed.

If the people in Tampa were fans of the team they would show regardless of the building. Especially for a winning team.

Hey I live about 5 minutes from the Trop.

Next year I get to see my Cardinals play...... 5 minutes from my house. That has selfish value.

There is just too much to do here. It's too damn hot to go to Sept. football games. The Trop and Miami's baseball stadiums are the pits for watching baseball.

I think its BS if they just move the stadium closer to Tampa all will be well. Not going to happen. I get over into the middle of Tampa daily in a 1/2 hour. They are not willing to drive 1/2 hour to get to a game?

They do not have a fan base that is jaded and cynical from two decades of suckage. Big, big difference.

Kansas City wants to believe in the Royals again but, they have to prove they are for real before the town will completely buy in. Twenty eight years since your last post season appearance is psychologically damaging in a major way to a fan base. The Royals have some big time fan relationship repairing to do.

Ybor sucks now. The nightlife is in downtown St. Pete. The stadium does have good sightlines. And you can't beat Florida in late Dec., early Jan. Snow and ice or 72 degrees and sunny?

Has Ybor gone down? That sucks. I live in AZ so the weather thing is no big deal but I love going to the bowl games there.

Bud Selig wanted to contract teams for awhile, didn't he?

Get rid of that team and send Wil Meyers back to KC where he belongs.
