New Republican strategy to eliminate the CR and piecemeal the budget

So there's a new strategy making the rounds - we'll see soon how real it is. But basically it's this: rather than yielding to Reid and Obama's desire to shut down the government over a delay, the Republicans in the House may start to pass individual budget measures for essential things, and leave things that aren't deemed essential to just simply go without funding - perhaps even permanently.

In the process, Obamacare simply doesn't get funded, and the Republicans start efforts to advance their own plan which has been in development over the last several months.

Apparently the establishment Republicans like Peter King are howling over this, but Boehner is faced with either doing this, sitting on the bill he just proposed, or hitting the nuclear button and moving against the base and siding with the Democrats.

If I were the Republicans, I would go down that list and start asking questions about how much of that can be kicked down to the states.

Bingo.

I wouldn't even say that it needs to be "kicked down" to the states. It should never leave the state in the first place.

Just hearing something that the House failed to pass its own veterans funding bill?

WTF? What's the excuse for that?

Dems voted against it, they say fund all or nothing.

Another one of Ted Cruz's plans that sort of makes sense until you remember that democrats exist.

The Dems voted against it?

Did we have some special elections overnight and the Republicans lost control of the House?

I would think that though the media and dems are being portrayed right now and totally innocent and what not, the longer they choose to stand firm the closer they get to the repubs throwing something against the wall that will eventually stick and then they are going to wish they had appeared to be more cooperative.

Give a blind man enough darts and stand perfectly still and he will eventually hit you.

The short answer is the mini-CRs in the "piecemeal" approach have to pass with 2/3 due to House rules.

BTW there's another reason to oppose this "piecemeal" effort.

If granted, the Republicans (or whichever party was in control) could just control the budget by only addressing those portions of government they wanted to fund and not trying too hard on the rest. It would also encourage future dysfunction.

Huh?

Who controls the rules on this? Don't the Republicans control the rules committee too?

It's absolutely amazing to me (although not surprising) that people in the Midwest and other "Red" states blame Obama, yet people on the coasts and other "Blue" states blame the Republicans.

I've seen it all day on Facebook and even though it's exactly what I expected, it's still fascinating for some reason.

This is the general problem when your legislative strategy is put into the hands of someone who's only been in Congress less than a year and has no idea how it works. It's backfired twice now, they are just winging it.

They used some proceedure that required a 2/3rds vote hoping to get some democrats to vote for it and thinking that if they vote against it, it might be hard to defend in the next election.

It seems like doing this with DoD funding would have been a better place to start.

The procedural means of putting it on the floor required a 2/3 majority vote to pass.

Cruz and the GOP figured that House Dems would be afraid to vote against it and that Reid would get the blame for not putting it to vote in Senate or would pass piece by piece in Senate and then Obama would have to decide to veto or not.
