Has anybody actually been affected by the shut down yet?

Do we have any furloughed government workers posting?

Anybody sucking a living off the government teat worried about that next welfare check rolling in?

Anybody having to rethink that scheduled trip to the Grand Canyon next week?

Let's hear about it.

"Tea baggers".... Wow, that's original! Are you 12?

"Know it"??? We've lived with the majority blocking things since, well, forever.

I don't think anybody is arguing that the conservative majority is doing whatever they have to do to force the conversation they want had, but it's not new by any means. And while we're at it, at this point I'd think it's in the country's best interest for the conservatives to carry it to at least the 18th so they can A) prove that the sun will still rise on the 18th, force Barak to do something he doesn't want to do and make him put his country's "needs" over the "needs" of the less motivated people who put him into office (in hopes of hands-outs), and C) it's totally up to Barack to choose to not pay the interest on the debt at that point.

If Barack and his cronies is right (and they're not) and the economy somehow blows up, well it's just happening faster than it would have anyway because of the hand-outs to lazy people and things like ObamaCare was worth ending the republic over in their opinion. Either way, we end in the same financial collapse that would have happened over time. But clearly, paying the interest on the debt (meaning we're fine in the eyes of the world) instead of other entitlement programs is totally his call. So it's a game a chicken that's worth having IMO - just to prove that he, again, is wrong. So yeah, that's the line I want to see crossed, THEN they can come to some goofy agreement of some sort, but they'd know his side of the isle isn't as smart as they think they are.

But don't forget, it's the guy in the white house who wasn't willing to negotiate because he claimed there was some sort of "gun to his head." Evidently his idea of a gun is different than the rest of the world. If what he meant to say was the ****ed-up "political process" that we all hate but the sitting majority party will never let go of (remember the line item veto!!), well, welcome to Washington asshole! They ALL DO IT when it suits their cause...

BTW, here's an example from Nancy's reign as queen.. And a block is a block, and all it does is force your own agenda/topic/conversation..

I have a friend who works in the conservation field. She was part time and worked through Missouri State university and was paid via federal grant. At first she was furloughed, but then her job was one that was deemed unnecessary, so she lost it. She wasn't so upset about losing the job, as she can get a part time job substitute teaching or something (she is married and they have two small children). She was more concerned with the fact that several conservation positions were among the first to be deemed unnecessary. She's very passionate about conserving what she deems to be our greatest treasure.

The politics of the whole issue, present and past, are downright disgusting. And the passion that's alive and well within the larger Govie employee is all too often masked with more visible and advertised examples of the minority. Not everybody is a NASA scientist, a game warden, or secret service, nor do they need to be, but that doesn't mean they don't do a good job at what they do. Further, and more often than folks would like to believe, the bureaucracy forced onto them from on-high is what folks hate about them. And trust me, they hate it as much as anybody.

Well, what one values as "our greatest treasure" is an individual value or choice. I'm sure she could find a job within a state that has a forestry program. The federal govt doesn't handle it all--nor do they need to.

IMO our greatest treasure is our freedom...and that is mostly gone.

Now that you speak of it, I did have a friend who works for NASA that lives up in Maryland who is currently on furlough. He's getting by though.

That would be why I said "what she deems to be". I also said she would be able to find a job. The OP asked if anyone had been affected. She had, so I shared.

Is he doing freelance astrophysics through a temp agency while he's furloughed?

He works with computers. He's doing some freelance work for some cash so he doesn't have to burn through very much of his savings.
