Has anybody actually been affected by the shut down yet?

Do we have any furloughed government workers posting?

Anybody sucking a living off the government teat worried about that next welfare check rolling in?

Anybody having to rethink that scheduled trip to the Grand Canyon next week?

Let's hear about it.

3. New Mexico ($1.89)
4. Mississippi ($1.84)
5. Alaska ($1.82)

9. South Dakota ($1.59)
10. Arkansas ($1.53)

How many of those states are red?

Frankly, the coasts/blue states largely get screwed on the redistribution of wealth, so if middle America wants a shutdown, then let's see how happy they are once all those programs shut down.

States Receiving Least in Federal Spending Per Dollar of Federal Taxes Paid:

1. New Jersey ($0.62)
2. Connecticut ($0.64)
3. New Hampshire ($0.68)
4. Nevada ($0.73)
5. Illinois ($0.77)
6. Minnesota ($0.77)
7. Colorado ($0.79)
8. Massachusetts ($0.79)
9. California ($0.81)
10. New York ($0.81)

Too bad military spending isn't included, now that I think about -- that's where the red states tend to clean up.
Does that include the money spent not securing our borders?

Meat, poultry, and grain inspectors will continue to work. However, the USDA will not issue any statistical or economic reports, including reports on the prices and supply levels of agricultural commodities. These reports are particularly important to commodities markets. The Forest Service will close its offices and furlough the vast majority of its staff, with only a limited number of law enforcement and firefighting personnel remaining on duty. Campgrounds and other recreational sites will be shuttered.

Air traffic controllers will continue to work, but about 3,000 airline safety inspectors will be furloughed.

Veterans have already received pension, disability, and GI Bill payments for the month of October. If the shutdown lasts for more than two or three weeks, the VA may not be able to pay benefits for the month of November. The VA will continue to work on disability claims that were filed before the shutdown, but veterans may experience delays. New disability claims will not be processed during the shutdown and all appeals of disability claims will be suspended.

The Centers For Disease Control will not be able to conduct "in-depth investigations to identify and link outbreaks that may be occurring simultaneously in multiple states" or provide flu surveillance due to the furloughing of 68% of its employees.

The Environmental Protection Agency will furlough over 93% of its 16,205 employees. The Agency will almost entirely cease issuing licenses and permits, which may cause delays for companies seeking to build or expand facilities.

NASA will furlough 98% of its staff, leaving fewer than 600 out of 18,000 employees on the job. NASA will continue to support the astronauts on the International Space Station and the agency will maintain spacecraft that have already launched. However, work with unmanned spacecraft will be minimal. According to NASA spokesman Allard Beutel, the Curiosity rover currently on Mars "will be put in a protective mode for the security of the rover, but no new data-gathering will take place." The Hubble Space Telescope will continue to operate, but analysis of the data it collects will cease. Work on any spacecraft that have not yet launched will stop.[54][55] NASA TV, the organization's cable and IPTV network, was taken silent beyond a still screen.

The Small Business Administration will stop processing new loans to small businesses with the exception of loans to businesses affected by natural disasters. Existing loans will be unaffected. Programs that help mentor business owners, including businesses owned by veterans, will be shut down. About 62% of SBA employees will be furloughed.

The Smithsonian Institution will shut down. Among the attractions that will be closed are the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, and the National Zoological Park. Skeleton crews will be on site to provide security and to feed and care for the animals.

That data simply reflects the taxes paid / federal dollars received by each state in the U.S.

Took a phonecall from FAA telling me it was her last day until further notice and asking if we'd do a $35k job for them on the hopes that they'd pay us later maybe.
Even she laughed while asking.

I'm wondering how it is calculated. Would programs mandated by the feds, but run by the state on fed funds, be counted? I would almost like to see a breakdown but I don't want to sift through the data.

I would imagine so. So long as they are funded by the feds, that's a dollar going into that state, right?

They think they will be able to get me on the essential employee list, so hopefully my furlough isn't long, but for now I have some free time on my hands..

Sure. But the discussion gets political rather than economical fairly quickly depending on how those funds are spent.

errr...no.

If, pick a state -- Nevada -- gets an average of $1.05 in federal money for every dollar of taxes paid, then that's what it gets for what it gives.

Allocation doesn't matter, Nevada gets a NET benefit. Other states have a net loss.

Besides, I'm not aware of states having all that much discretion as to how to spend most of those monies. I think the vast, vast majority of those dollars are specifically earmarked.

I'm considered essential and must report to work, cancel all leave, or go into a furlough status for the leave. I was involved in the training department, and that department is pretty much sut down during this period so I just "work the boards". Although I get to work, I do not get paid for it until a CR is signed, so, hoping this nonsense doesn't go on too long.

Not complaining, though, just reporting, There are fellow federal workers getting a much rougher time of it than I.
