Has anybody actually been affected by the shut down yet?

Do we have any furloughed government workers posting?

Anybody sucking a living off the government teat worried about that next welfare check rolling in?

Anybody having to rethink that scheduled trip to the Grand Canyon next week?

Let's hear about it.

errr...yes. You made it political from the onset by bringing up the red state versus blue state comparison, but you are offering nothing but raw numbers even while stating that the states have little to no discretionary powers. For your list to be meaningful you'd have to consider where exactly those funds are spent within the state. For your list to be relevant you'd have to weigh those specifics versus the avowed platforms of the D's and the R's.

Meat, poultry, and grain inspectors will continue to work. However, the USDA will not issue any statistical or economic reports, including reports on the prices and supply levels of agricultural commodities. These reports are particularly important to commodities markets. The Forest Service will close its offices and furlough the vast majority of its staff, with only a limited number of law enforcement and firefighting personnel remaining on duty. Campgrounds and other recreational sites will be shuttered.

Air traffic controllers will continue to work, but about 3,000 airline safety inspectors will be furloughed.

Veterans have already received pension, disability, and GI Bill payments for the month of October. If the shutdown lasts for more than two or three weeks, the VA may not be able to pay benefits for the month of November. The VA will continue to work on disability claims that were filed before the shutdown, but veterans may experience delays. New disability claims will not be processed during the shutdown and all appeals of disability claims will be suspended.

The Centers For Disease Control will not be able to conduct "in-depth investigations to identify and link outbreaks that may be occurring simultaneously in multiple states" or provide flu surveillance due to the furloughing of 68% of its employees.

The Environmental Protection Agency will furlough over 93% of its 16,205 employees. The Agency will almost entirely cease issuing licenses and permits, which may cause delays for companies seeking to build or expand facilities.

NASA will furlough 98% of its staff, leaving fewer than 600 out of 18,000 employees on the job. NASA will continue to support the astronauts on the International Space Station and the agency will maintain spacecraft that have already launched. However, work with unmanned spacecraft will be minimal. According to NASA spokesman Allard Beutel, the Curiosity rover currently on Mars "will be put in a protective mode for the security of the rover, but no new data-gathering will take place." The Hubble Space Telescope will continue to operate, but analysis of the data it collects will cease. Work on any spacecraft that have not yet launched will stop.[54][55] NASA TV, the organization's cable and IPTV network, was taken silent beyond a still screen.

The Small Business Administration will stop processing new loans to small businesses with the exception of loans to businesses affected by natural disasters. Existing loans will be unaffected. Programs that help mentor business owners, including businesses owned by veterans, will be shut down. About 62% of SBA employees will be furloughed.

The Smithsonian Institution will shut down. Among the attractions that will be closed are the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, and the National Zoological Park. Skeleton crews will be on site to provide security and to feed and care for the animals.

No it doesn't. Seriously, do you have me on ignore? This is the THIRD time I have had to address this and it's getting annoying. This is total Federal SPENDING in each state which includes all sorts of things that don't fit the narrative you are pushing. If you want to keep pushing this claptrap then at least use data that has been properly parsed.

This will count as the 4th time to address this nonsense. No, no and no. This is TOTAL Federal spending within that state not money allocated to the state (although that is of course included). In some cases that spending represents a benefit; in other cases not so much. Your representation of the data is pretty much meaningless given what the actual data is. You'll need to dig down and parse the data yourself if you want to draw any meaningful conclusions from it.

I think while the government is shut down I shouldn't owe taxes on any dollars I make during that period.

Here, I'll create a goofy extreme situation to illustrate my point because I'm sleepy and I don't really have a dog in this fight:

Suppose the feds send a billion dollars to Arizona for some shiny new Abort-o-Matic vending machines. It's authorized by the Every Child Left Behind Act that those horrible Dems pushed through and Obama signed. But everyone knows that Arizona is 99.99% God fearing right wing extremist pro-birther Repubs who shudder at the thought of a sperm or an egg being spent uselessly no matter how many knuckle babies are wasted in the process, or precious eggs get squandered in the fallopian tubes of Fate. The money still gets sent and the Abort-O-Matics get built. The billion dollars gets counted against those poor Arizonians.

a) That's a terrific idea for Arizona. Texas too.

b) I'd imagine most federal spending in individual congressional districts is for defense, entitlements, pork, and social services. I don't really see much on that list that even partisan RW congresscritters disagree with.

Responding to frazod's original question...

I'm a DA civilian, and am posting right now because I was furloughed today (I was also furloughed for 6 days during sequestration).

My organization radically modified its operations in order to be functional, not optimal, for the short term (~1 week).

This hurts financially, but I'll survive for the short term. I'm more concerned for my unit's mission if this runs longer than 10 days.

Well, Amnorix was saying that those numbers don't include military and "entitlements" is a little vague. Social services sounds very unRepublican but everybody loves pork.

I don't have you on ignore. If you've posted on this topic before, then I've either not seen it, or forgotten it. I tend to be active for a half day or so, and then gone for two days, never to circle back to old threads, so it would be easy for me to miss a response.

Right, total federal spending in each state. I get that. In a prior post I made a reference to "not including military", which was misleading/confusing to say the least.

The narrative that I'm pushing is that many red states are net beneficiaries of the federal tax/spend program. This data supports that. Where do you disagree?

My bad. AFAIK it DOES include military spending. I was trying to make a different point, but the context led to confusion, which was definitely my bad.
