Obama Flaps His Lips About Redskins Name...

President Barack Obama says if he was owner of Washington Redskins he’d think about changing team nickname

The issue of the Washington Redskins' nickname is a hot-button topic, in a city that loves to debate hot-button issues.

President Barack Obama has some serious things to worry about, like the government being shut down. But the Associated Press, during an exclusive interview, squeezed in a queston to Obama about the Redskins' nickname and the idea that it is offensive and should be changed. And Obama gave an interesting answer:

"(P)eople get pretty attached to team names, mascots," Obama told the Associated Press. "I don't think there are any Redskins fans that mean offense. I've got to say that if I were the owner of the team and I knew that there was a name of my team – even if it had a storied history – that was offending a sizeable group of people, I'd think about changing it.

"But I don't want to detract from the wonderful Redskins fans that are here. They love their team, and rightly so – even though they've been having a pretty tough time this year. But I think – all these mascots and team names related to Native Americans, Native Americans feel pretty strongly about it. And I don't know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real, legitimate concerns that people have about these things."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is among the other powerful people who has said that it might be time to think about changing the Redskins' team name.

Many people in Washington are attached to the Redskins name and the history behind it. It's a bit surprising during this time of more important political turmoil in Washington that Obama would offer a potentially unpopular opinion on another controversial issue.

[Watch: 3-year-old fan knows entire Seahawks roster]

UPDATE: On Saturday evening the Redskins released a statement from Lanny Davis, attorney for the team, on Obama's comments:

“As a supporter of President Obama, I am sure the President is not aware that in the highly respected independent Annenberg Institute poll (taken in 2004) with a national sample of Native Americans, 9 out of 10 Native Americans said they were not bothered by the name the ‘Washington Redskins.’ The President made these comments to the Associated Press, but he was apparently unaware that an April 2013 AP poll showed that 8 out of 10 of all Americans in a national sample don't think the Washington Redskins’ name should be changed.

"The Redskins respect everyone. But like devoted fans of the Atlanta Braves, the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Blackhawks (from President Obama's hometown), the fans love their team and its name and, like those fans, they do not intend to disparage or disrespect a racial or ethnic group. The name ‘Washington Redskins’ is 80 years old - its history and legacy and tradition. The Redskins’ fans sing 'Hail to the Redskins' every Sunday as an expression of honor, not disparagement."

That headline is better than the AP version, which was "OBAMA OPEN TO NAME CHANGE FOR WASHINGTON REDSKINS."

Seriously, WTF?

That has to be one of the weirdest, twisted, interpretations of civil rights I've seen.
Most other battles were instances where a majority WANTED to 'oppress/discriminate' and the minority felt that the battle couldn't be won, . . until the evidence of inequality was blaring and unignorable.
Here, the vast majority want to celebrate Native American culture, and the minority overwhelmingly agrees.
At worst this is analogous to the stereotype that blacks have huge penises. Not a lot of black male outrage over that, and none likely to arise in the foreseeable future.

It seems to me that every year the AFC West plays the NFC East, this controversy gets more attention so that there can be a demonstration scheduled for the Chiefs v. Redskins game.

The reporter asked a question about this and President Obama gave an unremarkable answer.

Nothing to see here, much less go crybaby over.

Jettio kissing Obamas ass? Really?

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday he was “proud” of President Obama for saying over the weekend he would “think about changing” the name of the Washington Redskins.

Carney noted he was a longtime Redskins fan and a native-born Washingtonian.

“I was proud of my president on this issue,” the press secretary said.

He also said that he did not believe Obama had called Redskins owner Dan Snyder to discuss the name.

Carney is a personal friend of the NFL owner, according to a financial disclosure form released in 2011.

In that document, Carney describes receiving a pair of tickets to watch two separate Redskins games in the owner’s suite. The disclosure refers to Snyder as a “long-time personal friend.”

The easy way to tell whether something like this isn't right is to sub in the names of other nationalities and see how it sounds. Chiefs is no worse than Kings or Generals, Braves is on par with Vikings or Spartans, and Blackhawks and Indians is about the same as Knicks or Celtics. That - and the fact that Native Americans are an integral part of our American culture and shouldn't be completely whitewashed away - are why I don't have a problem with them.

But imagine having a team named after another nationality's equivalent of 'Redskins'. The most lenient you can be is 'Blacks', which is odd, and the worst is . . . well, a lot worse. Regardless of for how long it's been that way, or that 'only' 10% are offended by it, it's a conversation that needs to be taken seriously.

It's also a conversation, I'm happy to say, that is being taken seriously. People are aware of it, and many care enough to think out an opinion about it. The President mentioned it, the media will squawk about it for a few days, and the judicial system has listened to the organized protesters and will decide how it fits in with our laws and morals and culture and stuff. I'm happy with that. The one I'm not happy with is Little Boy Fauntleroy Daniel Snyder, who is being close-minded and obstinate and completely non-receptive to anything ever, which is typical of him.

I thought that, too, but my time on here has taught me that there is a level of having to explain basic government concepts when you start to realize that the darkness is staring back.

So, you just need him to pay lip service. What, you don't think he's familiar with the situation? How do you know he hasn't considered the issue?
So, he needs to go over it again and again, even if he never wants to change it, because......
I don't know, why?
