What they got out of this is a lot of publicity making it unmistakable which party opposes Obamacare and, in contrast, which party is willing to at least threaten default to protect it. Memories over the shutdown will almost certainly fade, but if Obamacare's implementation really turns out to be bad news, the memory of which party is guilty will be indelible.

Come to think of it, you don't post here much any more. The headlines about how the GOP supposedly "lost" this battle must have led you to believe there was a leftwing bandwagon big enough to jump on for a few days. Welcome back. Is there an address we can reach you at when the flood of bad news for democrats resumes?

This came up at Tuesday’s Western Republican Leadership Conference Debate, where Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich tussled on the question:

ROMNEY: Actually, Newt, we got the idea of an individual mandate from you.

GINGRICH: That’s not true. You got it from the Heritage Foundation.

ROMNEY: Yes, we got it from you, and you got it from the Heritage Foundation and from you.

GINGRICH: Wait a second. What you just said is not true. You did not get that from me. You got it from the Heritage Foundation.

ROMNEY: And you never supported them?

GINGRICH: I agree with them, but I’m just saying, what you said to this audience just now plain wasn’t true.

(CROSSTALK)

ROMNEY: OK. Let me ask, have you supported in the past an individual mandate?

GINGRICH: I absolutely did with the Heritage Foundation against Hillarycare.

ROMNEY: You did support an individual mandate?

ROMNEY: Oh, OK. That’s what I’m saying. We got the idea from you and the Heritage Foundation.

twoplustwo.com - politics forum. Drop in any time.

They've all come to enjoy the window I provide into a right-wing version of their forum via links to DC. Maybe DC would be interested in the converse.

The forum used to be dominated by libertarians and anarcho-capitalists. Now it leans left but there's still a bunch of libertarians. Sadly the conservatives tend to get ganged up on and not stick around, save a few hearty or crazy souls. Pretty much how I feel trying to post here battle royal-ing 10 conservatives in one thread. I don't know how Cosmo does it w/o going on a tri-state killing spree.

Did Heritage come up with the idea of making Catholic hospitals provide contraception coverage for their employees?

Obamacare is filled with non-Heritage toxicity. You're perverting the fact that Obamacare draws a few core ideas from Heritage into the lie that it's the same law that Heritage once proposed.

So if the US does default, do we as a nation just stop picking up the phone when China calls? When the repo man comes by, should be all just pretend we're Canada?

Mandates, subsides and guaranteed issue are the core components. Contraceptive policies don't change that and you know it.

You lied about Obamacare by saying that everything in it started as a Heritage idea.

I like some of the core components of Obamacare, but that doesn't mean the final package is attractive to me. And when you throw in the selective waivers and endless false promises, democrats deserve to have this exploding cigar go off in their faces.

Dude your spin is really lame. Any idiot can see that mandates and guaranteed issue is the core of the whole plan. The Heritage-inspired mandate is 99% of what this forum rails about. I understand why you wish people would stop spreading this information, I really do. But don't worry it never seems to stick in anyone's brain anyway - at least not conservatives.

I'm not going to play silly semantic spin games with you any more on this.

If that means you're going to stop lying about Obamacare's relationship to the Heritage plan then we're making progress.

I'm in favor of mandates and guaranteed issue. I'm not in favor of Obamacare. I bet that blows your mind since you apparently think all schemes involving those two components are identical.
