Gov. Brown Bans Lead Ammo In Hunting, Vetoes Other Gun Control Bills

By Patrick McGreevy and Melanie Mason October 11, 2013, 1:09 p.m.

http://www.latimes.com/local/politic...,6334949.story

You can read the article at the link I posted. I just wanted to put this quote out there:

I don’t believe that this bill’s blanket ban on semiautomatic rifles would reduce criminal activity or enhance public safety enough to warrant this infringement on gun owners’ rights,” Brown said.

When does he get assassinated?

Because of the lead ammo? Looks like he went against the restrictive stuff.

No, I mean because of the part I bolded. That quote goes against California Democratic party leadership.

I'm not the first to say it by any means but it seems to hold true. Democrats are to gun control as Republicans are to abortion. It's refreshing to hear a Democrat say something reasonable about gun control legislation.

Overall I have no issues with any of this. Not sure how much the lead bullets thing really stands up but meh, as long as he isn't trying to outlaw lead bullets in general.

There are some legislators up there in Sacramento that would like to. They figure if they can't get the gun may as well go after the ammo.

I didn't notice before, you seriously put the So in SoCal don't you? I'm a couple hours North of Sac myself. I'm headed down there this Tuesday. Want me to flip off any of the politicians while I'm there? Free of charge.

Yes the issue is far more subtle than most people realize. The science says that the impact of lead ammo on wildlife isn't clear. Things like habitat destruction/polution/people living closer to nature all have much greater impact.

What I believe the lead ammo ban is about is a subtle attack on the culture of hunting and as a side effect an attack on all gun owners. Fewer people hunt and fewer people will own guns which makes it easier to implement bans in the future(plus you don't have to worry about making laws that could 'hurt' the hunter).

Why is this an attack on hunting and banning say lead shot for waterfowl isn't. Well when you ban lead shot you have a pretty ready made alternative that really isn't hugely more expensive...steel shot.

However when you ban lead rifle rounds for hunting you can't replace lead rifle rounds with steel rifle rounds(ok you could....but steel rifle rounds would be armor piercing and a big no no).

Because something cheap like steel can't be used, you have to use more exotic materials like copper(which actually might be armor piercing too!). Those more exotic materials are all significantly more expensive too.

Where banning lead for hunting hits people is those that are lowest income. Everyone who shoots knows it's not the cost of your gun that's expensive...it's the cost of the ammo!

Those lower in income will be disproportionately affected by this and where do a lot of lower income people live? In rural areas that are more likely to hunt. Make it more expensive to buy hunting ammo and they'll do it less.

This is also likely pushed by the PETA folks etc for similar reasons. This law isn't about protecting animals for lead exposure it's about making hunting more expensive so fewer people will do it.

This is so true, There were several bills that never made it to the Governors desk that dealt with permits and taxes on Ammo. They have also tried to eliminate online sales of Ammo. And in todays current Ammo market Ammo is very difficult to come by. Almost all of my latest Ammo purchases have been online.

Are you saying he's in danger of being assassinated by pissed off democratic Californians? What are they going to do, rain down on him with insufferable nagging and borderline harsh language?

And I see nothing wrong with what he enacted and didn't enact.

Consider it done. I will take a break from my wanton debauchery. A short one, but I'll do it.
