When you think of Tea Party members you think of...

Quick poll to see what you guys think of people who identify themselves as members or supporters of the Tea Party.

I forgot to make this poll public, but consider it public because when I get a chance I'll likely change the setting in the db to do so.

OK poll is now officially public.

So how are we defining intelligence for this discussion?

Someone can know a lot about one subject and be a complete and total dumbass (See TJ and BEP and their "knowledge" of the Miserablian school of economics).

An accurate measurement of IQ isn't available here but I think most can agree that a measure of science comprehension is a "good enough" proxy for the purposes of this discussion.

Education is easy to quantify and a number of "studies" show that Tea Partiers are more educated than the general pop.

A great example of the mind**** that is the Tea Party:

Paul Broun. He's a Medical Doctor yet supports Young Earth Creationism.

The problem is there comes a point when you become so smart, that you become stubborn because you know you're right. That, to me, is the biggest problem with the tea party. It's one thing to have ideas. It's another thing to know how to bring ideas into action, and that means being a savvy politician.

Whether you like Bill Clinton's ideas or not, that guy knew how to play the political game. The tea party doesn't need a stubbornly principled guy. They need a smooth guy like Clinton and I just haven't seen it yet. I actually thought Romney was a lot more of that guy than Republicans gave him credit for.

I've already said what I need to say about the Tea Party and intelligence, but let me throw this in there: extremism is never good. Moderation and negotiation are what brought us our independence, the Constitution, our laws, our social structure, our civil rights, and the NFL. Extremism gave us the Trail of Tears, Dred Scott, McCarthyism, race riots, the Olympics bombing, 9/11, and the Oakland Raiders. It is what happens to nations whose people feel vulnerable, mistreated, or poor, and it never, ever works out well. It is the common thread of every evil in the world, and it should be the enemy to every one of us, left or right, all the time, without exception.

You love Cheney/Bush. They don't. They are in large part a reaction to Cheney/Bush.

Declaring Independence and taking up arms against the King, knowing that you'll probably be executed if you don't succeed, seems pretty extreme to me.
