When you think of Tea Party members you think of...

Quick poll to see what you guys think of people who identify themselves as members or supporters of the Tea Party.

I forgot to make this poll public, but consider it public because when I get a chance I'll likely change the setting in the db to do so.

OK poll is now officially public.

Nope. There's a tiny school of thought among weird conservatives that suggests that everyone who isn't willing to slit their own political wrists in the name of purity like an emo teenager is establishment or RINO, but those people are just nuts. I'm a small government conservative who shares the pro-growth, low taxation, individual freedom roots of the tea party.

Uh, no, not even close. We agree that the Bush administration was too willing to play the role of democrat-lite when it came to big government programs like prescription drugs and no child left behind, but we aren't a reaction to Bush/Cheney. We're a reaction to the big government solutions and bailouts started during the final days of the Bush administration and made much worse at the beginning of the Obama administration. The straw that broke the camel's back was Obama's mortgage bailout plan.

Yeah, it was extreme, but not what I think of as extremism in the modern sense. It was constructive, as we were building something. We weren't trying to reshape Britain the way we wanted, just separate from them. And we weren't practicing the tyranny of the minority.

And, frankly, I was thinking more along the lines of the writing of the Declaration of Independence and (especially) the Constitution, which was only crafted after more than ten years of intense negotiation between 13 different countries who each wanted different things, and after two earlier "drafts". There originally was no Bill of Rights; it came from demands made by the states before they agreed to sign. That's the moderation and negotiation I was thinking of.

Now laugh at my dig at the Raiders. It was funny.

I would say a mixture of well educated and borderline retarded. That's the nature of politics, though. Politics destroys the mind's ability to think rationally. For those people on the extremes this is twice as true. Politics skew what information people see, how they interpret it, and the "us vs them" mentality comes out and overrides most rational impulses. This board is living proof.

I think the same is true on both sides, Obama turns well educated, otherwise smart tea partiers into frothing morons and it does the same for their equivalent on the left, the occupy people. A lot of them are very well educated, but you bring up something like Bush, who was really very moderate, and their IQ drops to single digits.

When did 'don't spend more than you earn' and 'respect our immigration laws' become a bad thing? Yes, I know it's more complicated than that but...

Can anyone point out exactly what they dislike about the Tea Party stance besides the Race Baiter native mantra of "racist"? Where's the bad? Help me understand.

Social conservatism, apparently based on religious beliefs.

It's hard to pin down exactly what the Tea Party stands for because it's not really a political party and it doesn't actually have a platform. It's more of a movement to take over the Republican Party.

Sure. You can see that it has appeal. The whole thing just seems to be manufactured, and manipulated to make the tent as large as possible.
