HealthCare.Gov Needs Five Million Code Lines Rewritten

Obamacare’s online exchanges have been riddled with problems since they came online three weeks ago, and those issues may continue for at least the next few weeks. Contractors said fixing the problems by the November 1 deadline set by the administration would be “unrealistic,” according to the New York Times.

From the sluggish websites to garbled enrollment information, the flaws require the extensive rewriting of code: “One specialist said that as many as five million lines of software code may need to be rewritten before the Web site runs properly,” the Times reports — that’s out of a total of approximately 500 million lines of code, according to another expert.

Others experts warned that some of the website’s problems are yet to come. One technical specialist involved in the repair effort said, “The account creation and registration problems are masking the problems that will happen later.”

Woah. No way I would go that far, not even close.

But anyone claiming to know exactly how much it is going to take to fix this is guessing... you simply don't know until it's done and working. It could be fixed in a few weeks or it could take a few months or hell (unlikely) a few years.

There's no way to estimate how many lines will need to be re-written, and "lines" isn't in any way an indicator of how much work it is. "Lines" is not a measure of anything.

Further, if I have to re-write 500 lines it might be more or less work than some other effort where you have to rewrite something that is 5,000 lines in total. Is 5 million the size of the whole thing in total? Is that the part that needs to be re-written? I have to think it's the former. How embarrassing would it be for them to take a year to write something so broken, and then people from private come in and fit it in a week or two?

If they wanted to give us a real estimate of how incompetent the development team was, tell us how many hours of labor are needed to fix it. Not getting any kind of a timeline for when it might be working is something that would never happen in the private sector, which is amusing.

This whole thing just shows us why "government" triggers guffawing from people who work in the private sector. The idea that they rolled out something that wouldn't roll, that you couldn't even create an account for, something that was demonstrably untested - that is really a feat. Who ever heard of such a thing? I couldn't push a project that was that big of a failure to "live" without anyone knowing, there's no way. And if I did I'd be collecting my 99 weeks of unemployment.

That's why I don't buy for a moment that they thought this was ready. There is no way that nobody was being told that this website was a cluster****. We all know the government would make something that didn't work well in a much longer time and a much higher cost than would happen at your workplace, but there must have been plenty of CYA going on as this website that was just basically a picture of a smiling person and a few buttons supposedly went up.

What more can you say. Like most things in the Obama regime, it all smacks of anything but "transparency"

maybe they should hire a state of the art company to just create a new site that actually works...

We'll know a lot more by mid November.
Only non-techs see 5 million lines of code and freak out. It's some work, but not a freak out scenerio.

I don't know if this is public information yet or not. A major company in web sites and code building has been brought in. They have developed websites with BILLIONS of daily users, registering and providing content to clients.

I'm assuming they are doing this because of their feelings towards Obama to help out. But whatever there reasons, there is no one better in the field.

Is it embedded code?

From what I have heard it's actually a number of big boys getting involved at this point. But like I said, I'd guess it's really a "wait and see" until at least mid November.

At which point you SHOULD have a site that works with one month for people to log in and find out that they are being forced to buy insurance at rates they can't afford which is why they eschewed buying it in the first place.

With the "big boys" getting involved (not for free I presume), are we still paying the ****ape company that launched this POS? They need to be put out of business and sued for non performance.

Depends on the contract though I agree with the sentiment...
