Miami's Martin leaves team after 'emotional breakdown'

Jonathan Martin leaves Dolphins after 'breakdown'

By Dan Hanzus

An unusual situation is unfolding in Miami, where Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team after suffering an "emotional breakdown" this week.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Wednesday that Martin is currently seeking help with his family after an incident at the team's cafeteria, according to team sources.

Martin is listed on the team's injury report with an illness, and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

The second-year pro has not been with the team since that time. Darlington reports that Martin immediately sought treatment at a local hospital. He has since left the hospital and is now spending time with his family, according to team sources.

Martin opened the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle. He was moved to right tackle when the team acquired Bryant McKinnie via trade last week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in Martin's place on Thursday.

You are blind if you don't think it's a huge problem that veteran players are using locker room pressure to force rookies to take money out of their own pocket to pay for BS.
Of course I have, and I had a choice to play along or not, just like Martin did.

Was some Las Vegas airfare a huge financial hardship for him? He signed a 4 year, $4.7 million contract when he was drafted and he received a $1.9 million signing bonus.

Is it right that the rookies pay for this trip every year? Well, no, but if I'm the rookie and I just got paid $6 million, and the choice here is between building a relationship with the rest of the team by adhering to social conventions and respecting this tradition, going on a trip where everyone parties together and if this is going to help my career, I wouldn't make a huge issue of it. It's a business expense. It's like buying a set of golf clubs so you can play with the guys in the office at a new job. Even though I dont particularly enjoy golf if it helps my career get off to a good start, why not?

In any case, even if I decided not to go along with it and refused, and I received harrassment about it, I wouldn't quit over it.

Except the golf clubs are 10% of your after-tax salary....

The difference is that if you decided not to buy golf clubs, I doubt you'd receive a voice mail telling you that someone is going to slap your mouth, slap your mother, and shit in your mouth. If that did happen and you reported it, that employee would be fired that day.

This....I am sorry, but this is unacceptable behavior in any workplace, including the football locker room.

I really can't stand when people say just because athletes make millions, that justifies fleecing them. 15,000 is a shitload of money. Whether that is half your salary or a percent of your salary. And no workplace should be that toxic where people go beyond harassing you outside of work. There is nothing right about this, whether at work or not at work. And no, I don't think this happens everywhere in the Nfl to this extent.

For some reason this reminds me of the Sopranos scene where Pauly buys a bunch of extra food and drinks just to run up Christopher's tab and stick it to him.

I think there are some common sense boundaries for hazing/initiating and Richie Incognito ignored every single one of them.

There are always a few guys who have no idea how to handle a position of power.

Martin didn't have to participate. Sounds like he chose to.

Incognito is a toxic person and should be released. That doesn't explain why Martin had to be a pansy about it or why this is a story.
