Out of State Contributions

So we have an election tomorrow in Colorado, and one of the issues on the ballot is a massive tax increase to give money to K-12 schools. It's got all sorts of groundbreaking features, such as:

a) the largest state tax increase in Colorado history
b) the introduction of an income tax to fund schools, on top of property taxes
c) the introduction of a progressive income tax in Colorado that taxes higher incomes at a higher rate

Obviously, it's pretty controversial.

What really annoys me is that we heard recently that the mayor of New York (Bloomberg) gave $1 million to the campaign to pass this tax, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation gave $1 million to the campaign to pass this tax.

They're both promoting it as education reform, and whatever. The reason doesn't matter.

But why do we allow out-of-state interests who will not pay the tax to get involved and help get the new tax passed? I've got some rich guy in New York and some rich guy in Washington saying, "Well, hey. Let's get those people in Colorado to pay more taxes." Is there some rationale for doing this that I don't understand?

This got me to thinking about what do I pay for schools through my property taxes? Luckily or unluckily for me I have just opened up my tax bills. After doing a little math it turns out I am contributing $343.60 per month to education just from property taxes in my county.

I feel I am contributing more than my fair share.

You are blessed to live in a nice home in a nice community, I suspect. That, or you live in a nice neighborhood that is in a county/municipality that has schools with very, very tough demographics.

Either way, congrats to you!!! I do hope your money is being well spent helping America's future the opportunity to achieve your level of success.

So, you have no idea what they pay now but you want to cry that they should pay more.

Makes sense.

Wow, that's significant. If this increase had gone through I would've paid at least that and most likely significantly more. But as it stands I pay only about 2/3rds that amount (discounting federal tax pass-throughs).

To be fair, since I live in Southern Calif our property values are a little higher than most places. In addition to my primary residence I am including a couple rental properties as well.

The tax bill states that 40% of property taxes go to education.

I never understood people who complain about local taxes for education, given that it correlates quite well with home values.

Depends on where you live. Our local schools are crap. So I sent my daughter to private school. Then when it came time for college we couldn't get any assistance. So I foot the bill. Now I see my state is coughing up about $5 million for the illegals to attend college. So I feel I have every right to bitch about it.

The only way you can understand is to be in the situation where you're sending your kid to private school while still trying to cover the nut.

So if you have to pay more for housing, your taxes should be higher?

In fairness though, that's normally factored into the value of homes. You probably pay less for your home than a similar version located in a good public school district. Hence you're coming out even despite paying more for private schooling.

That stands to reason doesn't it? Children who live in areas with big expensive homes have proven to cost far more to educate.

You might want to look at it that way, I see it like I threw away the tax money that went to public education. I had 2 choices suck it up and provide my daughter with an inferior education on my tax dollars, or pony up and sacrifice to pay for a proper education out of pocket. Which in affect doubled the cost of education.

Besides we're talking County taxes we don't pay local city taxes. I am not sure how they divie up the revenue amongst the several school districts in the county.
